HER2/neu PREVALENCE AMONG LEBANESE PATIENTS WITH GASTRIC ADENOCARCINOMA: AN OBSERVATIONAL STUDY *Hematology-Oncology Department Faculty of Medicine Saint-Joseph University Beirut, Lebanon S50 Introduction • Gastric cancer represents the third most common cause of cancer-related death in the world, with most patients presenting with an advanced disease. However, some adenocarcinomas overexpress the type II epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) or HER2/neu, similarly to that seen in breast cancer. Trastuzumab, an anti-HER2 monoclonal antibody, was approved in combination with chemotherapy for the treatment of patients with metastatic HER2-overexpressing gastric adenocarcinomas. Unfortunately, no data has been published neither in Lebanon nor the Middle Eastern region regarding the prevalence of the HER2/neu overexpression in gastric adenocarcinoma. Material and Methods • This is an observational study to estimate the prevalence of the HER2/neu in gastric adenocarcinomas within the Lebanese population as experienced in a clinic affiliated to Hôtel-Dieu de France Hospital in Lebanon. Variables studied included gastrectomy type, lymphadenectomy, disease extension, metastatic site, HER2/neu status and detection technique, therapeutic approach and duration of treatment, response and response duration. Results • Forty-five gastric cancer patients diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma over 5 years were subject to follow-up. Final report concerning patients’ features and outcomes is expected in November 2015. Conclusions • This study is the first in the region to address the overexpression of HER2/neu in gastric adenocarcinomas, and to evaluate therapeutic strategies, and if appropriate, the use of trastuzumab.
