Selon les thèmes retenus, le cours pourrait porter sur des points tels que: le débat internalisme/externalisme; les approches constructivistes; le renouveau méta-éthique, les notions de consensus, de subjectivité, d'impartialité et de vertu; les problèmes de la tolérance, de l'égalité, du pluralisme... Les thèmes choisis devront être abordés d'un point de vue philosophique; ils seront étudiés pour eux-mêmes, ou dans la perspective des théories éthiques traditionnelles (comme le contractualisme, l'utilitarisme ou le perfectionnisme) ou dans la perspective des tendances actuelles en philosophie des sciences sociales (comme le pragmatisme, le contextualisme ou l'empirisme). DESCRIPTION DU COURS Ce cours est consacré à l’étude de l’utilitarisme classique et contemporain. L’objectif du cours est d’analyser les caractéristiques essentielles de l’utilitarisme, ses différentes formes et ses problèmes. Plus spécifiquement, nous nous concentrerons sur les questions suivantes. (1) Quelle est la version la plus plausible de l’utilitarisme ? (2) Est-ce que l’utilitarisme peut être justifié ? (3) Est-ce que l’utilitarisme respecte le caractère distinct des personnes ? (4) Est-ce que l’utilitarisme respecte l’intégrité des personnes ? (5) Est-ce que les théories conséquentialistes contemporaines permettent de répondre aux objections contre l’utilitarisme ? EVALUATION Modalités. La note finale du cours se basera sur une dissertation de mi-session de 3000 mots (50%) et sur un examen final (50%). Les sujets de dissertation seront annoncés en classe au début de la 5ème séance. La dissertation devra être remise en classe le 7 mars 2013. Pour des raisons d'équité, aucun retard ne sera toléré. La pénalité sera de 2% pour chaque jour de retard et 2% pour chaque tranche de 100 mots en excès. L’examen aura lieu en classe le 18 avril 2013. Critères. 1. Compréhension : exactitude et rigueur dans l’explication des thèses, arguments et concepts. (30%) 2. Pertinence et suffisance (des éléments de réponse retenus). (30%) 3. Aspect critique : présentation et discussion des critiques que l’étudiant juge pertinentes. (10%) 4. Formulation : clarté, maîtrise de l'usage des catégories d'analyse et précision terminologique.
