Captain America: Civil War (2016)
5
In "Captain America: Civil War", politicians think that superheroes
like Captain America and Iron Man need to be regulated. Tony
Stark (Iron Man's alter ego) thinks it's necessary, while Steve
Rogers (a.k.a. Captain America) doesn't think so. That eventually
splits their team, The Avengers. The situation escalates into a
full-blown confrontation between the heroes and their teams.
I thought "Captain America: Civil War" was very enjoyable. Both
characters share the responsibility for what happened: Iron Man
should have shown more respect for individual opinions, and
Captain America shouldn't have been so independent all the
time! But that's what makes the movie interesting and original.
Friends become foes, allies become enemies, and it's difficult to
choose one side or the other.

My grammar
Je comprends et
je m'entraîne.
1. LA PHRASE
CONDITIONNELLE EN IF +
PRÉTÉRIT, WOULD + V WB p. 99
• Quand on imagine une situation peu
probable, on peut utiliser une phrase
conditionnelle. Cette phrase commence par
if suivi du verbe conjugué au prétérit : le
prétérit signifie que la situation n'est pas
réelle, que c'est seulement une hypothèse
et donc qu'on est dans l'imaginaire. L'autre
partie de la phrase, c'est la conséquence
de ce qu'on imagine : cette partie utilise
l'auxiliaire would devant le verbe.
If I knew how to draw, I would create
a comic book.
• Avec le verbe be à la 1re personne du
singulier, on utilise were au lieu de was.
If I were Captain America, I would not fight
with Iron Man.
2 Complète les phrases avec la forme
correcte du verbe.
a.If you … (be) a superhero, you … (save) the
planet.
b.If we … (go) to New York City, we … (meet)
Spider-Man.
c.Lea … (not / be) so angry, if we … (talk) to her.
d.If Thanos … (be) a superhero, the Guardians
of the Galaxy … (not / fight) him.
2. WANT SOMEBODY TO + V
ET EXPECT SOMEBODY TO + V
WB p. 103
Les structures want somebody to + V
et expect somebody to + V, permettent
d'exprimer l'idée d'une influence de quelqu'un
sur quelqu'un d'autre.
• Si on veut que quelqu'un fasse quelque
chose, on emploie le verbe want, qui marque
la volonté et qui ressemble à un ordre que l'on
donne.
I want you to apologise to him.
• Avec le verbe expect, on n'exprime pas
un ordre mais on montre tout de même
qu'on s'attend à quelque chose de la part de
quelqu'un d'autre.
I expect them to be loyal and generous.
1 Réécris chaque phrase en employant
to expect / want somebody to + V.
a.I suppose that my sister will go to the
cinema tonight.
I expect my sister to go to the
cinema tonight.
b.My football coach forces us to go running
every day.
c.People think Magneto will win against
Professor X.
e.If I … (have) super-speed, I … (run) fast!
d.They urge me to send them the film review
right away.
3 Invente et écris la partie manquante de
chacune des phrases suivantes.
e.I predict that the new Marvel movie will win
an Oscar.
a.If I were a superhero, I … .
b.I would be excited, if I … .
c.If I had Superman’s powers, I … .
d.If I met iron man, I … .
e.i would protect the city, if … .
f. IShe would destroy the Empire State
Building, if she … .

f. My mother says that I must apologise to my

Traduis ces deux phrases :
a. I expect my friends to be generous.
b. I want my friends to be loyal.
En français et en anglais, on emploie
des temps verbaux différents après
les verbes introducteurs. Quelle est
cette différence ?
3. LE STYLE INDIRECT
WB p. 106
• Quand quelqu'un parle, on dit que cette
personne tient un discours direct. On peut
mettre son texte entre guillemets pour
montrer que c'est lui ou elle qui parle.
“I am Superman, and I defend freedom!”
• Quand je raconte ce que quelqu'un d'autre
a dit, alors c'est du discours indirect. On
l'appelle reported speech en anglais : c'est le
« discours rapporté ».
He said that he was Superman, and that he
defended freedom!
-- La phrase subit donc des changements : on
la commence par un verbe introducteur au
prétérit (he said that..., she replied that...)
suivi de la phrase de départ dans laquelle les
verbes prennent aussi la marque du prétérit et
les pronoms personnels passent de la 1re à la
3e personne (I am  he / she was ; I have 
he / she had ; I defend  he / she defended).
I'm a superheroine!
She said that she was a superheroine.
• On peut rapporter des affirmations mais
aussi des ordres ou des interrogations. Il
faut alors adapter le discours indirect en
choisissant le bon verbe introducteur.
“Is Spider-Man
ready to fight?”
She asked if SpiderMan was ready to fight.
-- Si, dans le discours direct, il y a un impératif,
on le transforme en (not) to + V et on choisit
tell comme verbe introducteur.
“Leave her
alone!”
He told him
to leave her alone.
“Don't look
at me!”
He told him
not to look at her.
4 Réécris ces phrases au discours indirect
et souligne les changements.
a.Hulk: “I am the strongest." (declare)
b.Thor: “I’m not just a superhero, I’m the son
of the god Odin.” (say / add)
c.Iron Man: “It is time to put an end to this
conspiracy!” (shout)
d.Oya: “Is Wolverine a dangerous guy?” (ask)

4. SHOULD + PRESENT
PERFECT WB p. 109
• Lorsqu'on a des regrets, on veut exprimer
qu'un événement aurait dû se passer
autrement : il existe pour cela la structure
should + verbe au present perfect.
-- L'auxiliaire should montre ce qu'on
voudrait, ce qu'on préférerait ; et, en mettant
le verbe au present perfect (auxiliaire have +
verbe au participe passé), on relie le passé au
présent.
-- Avec should, on exprime ce qui aurait dû
se passer ; avec shouldn't, on exprime ce qui
n'aurait pas dû arriver : c'est un regret.
Iron Man should have listened to his
friends.
Ms Marvel shouldn't have left her little
brother alone.
5 Réécris les phrases suivantes en
utilisant should + present perfect.
a.Spider-Man did not stop the robber that
eventually killed his uncle.
Spider-Man should have stopped...
b.Thor made The Hulk very angry
and got his hammer destroyed.
c.Captain America was so
independent all the time; that didn’t
help in the Civil War.
d.Iron Man did not show any
interest in other people's
opinions.
6 Tes parents n'auraient pas dû faire
certaines choses. Dis-le leur.
a.They went to the cinema to see "Captain
America: Civil War" without you.
You shouldn't have gone to
the cinema to see "Captain
America: Civil War" without me.
b.They hung up on your boyfriend / girlfriend.
c.They accused you of lying.
d.They tidied your room.
e.They read your email.

ROY LICHTENSTEIN
Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) was an American Pop artist best known for his parodies
of comic strips. Although other Pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns also
used popular imagery into their works, no one focused on comic books as exclusively
as him.
Lichtenstein‘s art became very popular
but he was often accused of lack of
originality, banality and even copying.
He defended himself saying that he
always made important changes. In
fact, he employed a complex technique
that involved using small, colored dots
to create a bigger chromatic contrast,
as in "M-Maybe".
