PRETERIT
EXERCICES
CONSTRUCTION D’UNE PHRASE INTERROGATIVE AU PRETERIT
Importance de l’auxiliaire WAS / WERE ou DID
• On utilise DID dans une phrase qui comporte un verbe d’action
• On utilise WAS avec un temps composé (be + ing / be + participe
passé). WERE est le pluriel de WAS.
• C’est toujours l’auxiliaire qui prend la marque du temps. Le verbe
restera donc toujours à la base verbale.
Exemple :
1. Did all Europeans celebrate Halloween ?
2. Why did the Celts celebrate Halloween ?
3. Were young kids scared of witches and ghosts ?
CONSTRUCTION D’UNE PHRASE NEGATIVE AU PRETERIT
Même remarque que ci-dessus. L’utilisation de l’auxiliaire est important.
• On lui ajoutera la négation NOT  WASN’T / WEREN’T ou
DIDN’T.
• L’auxiliaire prend la marque du temps ; le verbe d’action reste donc à
la base verbale.
Exemple :
1. French people didn’t celebrate Halloween in the past.
2. Halloween wasn’t a common celebration in France in the past.
3. Children weren’t scared of ghosts.
