Introduction
This volume contains the Proceedings of the International Colloquium
on Tumors of the Thyroid Gland which took place in Marseilles
in 1964. Most of the lectures were delivered in French but in
order to ensure a wider distribution of this volume on an international
basis, it was decided that it should be published mainly in English,
with abstracts in French. It is this translating work which rather
delayed the publication of the proceedings. In view of this lapse of
time, some authors found it necessary to adjust or complete their
papers in accordance with the progress which has since been made in
research and the contributions have therefore not lost any of their
topical interest.

We intended—and we believe we have succeeded in doing so—to
assemble at this Colloquium some of the best qualified and most competent
authorities on the subject in the Western world.
In order to animate a debate, a main lecture on a particular point
was coupled with a lecture of an opposing view. Divergent ideas were
thus confronted and different aspects and tendencies became evident.
In our opinion the main object of a congress is achieved if it provides
the possibility for discussing a problem from every angle in the presence
of holders of the most varied views. We believe that at this
Colloquium an all-round picture of our knowledge on the tumors
of the thyroid gland was presented—a picture which is certainly not
definite but which will be valid for many years to come.
We hope that their scientific value will make up for certain shortcomings
in the English translation of some articles. The translators
and the editor have done their best to avoid errors which could lead
to a misinterpretation of the authors’ essential trends of thought and
the editor hopes that any such mistakes may not lessen the reader’s
interest in this volume.

Introduction
Voici l’ouvrage des Comptes-Rendus du Colloque Anatomo-Clinique
International de Marseille (juin 1964) sur les Tumeurs du Corps Thyroïde.
La parution a quelque peu été retardée, retard dû aux difficultés
de la traduction. En effet, la plupart des rapports et des communications
ont été présentés en français, mais pour faciliter une diffusion
internationale nous nous sommes décidés à les publier en anglais. Vu
le temps écoulé entre le Congrès et la parution des articles, certains
auteurs ont souhaité apporter quelques changements à leur texte soit
pour préciser leur pensée, soit pour l’adapter à l’évolution de leurs idées.
Néanmoins nous ne croyons pas que ce livre ait perdu de son
actualité. Nous avions souhaité, et nous pensons avoir réussi, réunir
dans ce Colloque les médecins les plus qualifiés et les plus compétents
de tout le monde occidental pour traiter de ce sujet.
Pour animer les débats nous nous sommes attachés à opposer dans
chacune de ses parties un Rapporteur et un Discutant, dont nous
savions que les opinions différaient. Ainsi tous les aspects du problème
ont pu être mis en évidence, et les divergences d’idées confrontées.
C’est au fond le but essentiel d’un Congrès de faire le tour complet
d’une question en présence même des hommes qui soutiennent des

avis différents.
Aussi croyons-nous que ce Colloque a été une mise au point, certes
pas définitive, mais valable pour encore de nombreuses années.
L’intérêt et la valeur de cet ouvrage incitera, nous l’espérons, ses
lecteurs à l’indulgence si la traduction anglaise de certains articles
s’avère présenter quelques imperfections. Les traducteurs et le rédacteur
ont fait de leur mieux pour qu’elles altèrent au minimum l’essentiel
de la pensée des auteurs, et le rédacteur souhaite qu’elles n’enlêvent
rien à l’intérêt que vous prendrez à la lecture de ce livre.
