IV. Modal Verbs and expressions of modality :
Tense has a relationship to the TIME of an event ; ASPECT concerns its nature : it is COMPLETED or
UNCOMPLETED. MODALITY expresses an attitude towards or a judgement of an event.
ROOT MODALITY has to do with DUTY (You must listen to me) or ABILTY (You can speak English well). There
are two categories of root modality : 1) DEONTIC, which concerns duty, orders, requirements, suggestions,
wishes ; and 2) DYNAMIC which concerns properties or disposition, capacities which are innate or learned.
EPISTEMIC MODALITY expresses how we use our powers of logic or reason to judge whether an event is
probable, possible, or unlikely. Cary is absent today. She must be ill (high degree of probability). She may have
missed the bus (possibility). She might have forgotten we have class this afternoon (low degree of possibility).
MODALITY concerns the meaning of the sentence. MODAL VERBS are a linguistic form we can use to express
modality.
To help you review for the exam, I recommend you consult Tout sur les verbes anglais : 116-133. I will also put
