Unité 17 Place de l'accent lexical
1- Rappel : Tout mot en anglais contient un accent primaire, c’est-à-dire une syllabe accentuée plus que l(es) autre(s). Le plus
souvent c’est le radical (racine) du mot qui porte cet accent primaire (appelé accent lexical). Pour les mots de deux syllabes c’est
presque toujours la première syllabe qui est accentuée (93 % des cas).
Ex. 'cancer, 'woman, 'reason
Sont accentués sur la 2e syllabe les mots dont le premier élément est un préfixe non séparables.
Ex. im'mune, a'gain

3- Rappel : L'ajout du suffixe -ic entraîne le plus souvent un glissement de l'accent lexical vers l'avantdernière syllabe. Ainsi 'photograph devient photo'graphic, de même que 'colon devient co'lonic
Cette terminaison se trouve dans un nombre important d’adjectifs utilisés en médecine ainsi que dans des noms de sciences :
Ex. embry'onic, or'ganic, co'lonic, is'chemic, hippo'cratic, sympa'thetic, 'physics, pe'diatrics…

Adjectifs : pedi'atric, ortho'pedic, antibi'otic, ne'phritic, ar'thritic, psychi'atric, rheu'matic, spo'radic, epi'gastric, bron'chitic.
Noms : ortho'pedics, ge'netics. (Ces noms de sciences, bien que se terminant par un -s, sont toujours accordés avec un verbe au
singulier).
Attention, il existe 8 exceptions courantes à cette règle :
'Arabic, 'arsenic, 'catholic, 'heretic, 'lunatic, a'rithmetic, 'rhetoric, 'politics
Terminaisons -ical, -ically
Les terminaisons -al, -ally ne modifient en rien la place de l’accent, par conséquent celui de bio'graphical et de bio'graphically reste le
même que celui de bio'graphic. En revanche, les exceptions à la règle citée ci-dessus se régularisent à l’addition de ces terminaisons :
