Wirtschaftswissenschaftler definieren Ökonomie oft als einen Komplex von Mechanismen,
die ausschliesslich vom Markt reguliert werden. Gemäss dieser weit verbreiteten
Vorstellung besteht menschliches Wirtschaftsverhalten aus Haltungen und
Handlungsstrategien, die losgelöst sind von der gesellschaftlichen Sphäre. Aus
ethnologischer Sicht erscheint das ökonomische Handeln von Menschen dagegen nur
verständlich, wenn es im Zusammenhang mit der Sozialstruktur und mit der Kultur
betrachtet wird, in die es eingegliedert ist. Die Vorlesung soll daher aufzeigen, wie
menschliches Wirtschaften in den kollektiven Vorstellungen, Wertorientierungen und
Verhaltensleitbildern eingebettet ist.
