FUTUR SIMPLE
You already know how to express the future in French by using the present tense of
aller + an infinitive; that's the "Futur Proche" (near future) Another way to talk about
future events is to use the "Futur Simple" (future).
In English, you use "will" to indicate the future. You need 2 parts, 2 words to form
the English future tense.
will + verbe sans “to”
2 distinct words
Exemple: This summer I will travel to Europe.
(1) (2)
The "futur simple" corresponds to the English "will + verb without to".
In French, unlike in English, the futur simple is a simple tense, that means that in
French, only one word is necessary: the verb bearing a future ending.
Racine du futur + terminaison du futur
(future stem) + (future ending)
1 word
Exemple: Cet été, je voyagerai en Europe
(1)
a) La racine (the stem)
The French stem of verbs in the future tense always ends in -r.
For many verbs, this is how you figure out the stem:
Future stem = Infinitif (without “e” for –re verbs)
Exemples: manger je mangerai
parler je parlerai
finir je finirai
partir je partirai
vendre je vendrai
prendre je prendrai
