From the Association of Bank Representatives in Switzerland (1912) to the Swiss Bankers Association (1919). Origin, morphology and functions of the Swiss banking sector’s professional organisation. This proposal is a case study which focuses on the origin and the first years of one of the most important organisations of the Swiss economic world, the Swiss Bankers Association (SBA). The period covered stretches from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 1920s. It corresponds to the years of the (belated) creation and the first consolidation of this association, which was founded in 1912, and which was not a project of the banking circles themselves but of a prestigious scholarly society, situated at the intersection of the university, political and economic worlds of that time. We will show that the creation, the shape and the functioning of this association, which quickly became dominated by the elite of the Swiss banking community, largely emanated from the battles of competition, internal rivalries and the heterogeneity of the circles of which it was supposed to aggreg2222ate and defend the interests. Functioning as a place of social exchange as well as of regulation of competition, taking on certain parastatal functions as did other major Swiss employers’ associations, it played a decisive role, both in terms of internal structuring of the Swiss banking sector and of its affirmation towards public authorities and other sectors of the economy. Based on archival documents, the proposed analysis will develop the four axes of the research program proposed by the organisers of the conference: origin and shape of organisations; functioning; financing; measuring of numbers and representativeness.
