Honorary Senior Lecturer à l'Université d'Edimbourg, il
dirige également la revue New Blackfriars. Le professeur
Kerr était jusqu’à tout récemment Régent de Blackfriars
Hall, à l’Université d'Oxford.

Fergus Kerr prononcera la conférence d’ouverture du
colloque annuel automnal de l'Association canadienne
Jacques Maritain. Ce colloque se propose de discuter
de thèmes relevant de la pensée thomiste en tant que
telle mais aussi de l’interprétation qu’en propose Kerr.

Fergus Kerr a écrit sur plusieurs
questions qui divisent les interprètes de Thomas d’Aquin, dont
les suivantes : Thomas d’Aquin
doit-il être considéré comme un
aristotélicien ? Comment interpréter les preuves de l’existence
de Dieu ? S’agit-il de preuves purement philosophiques
ou doivent-elles plutôt être lues dans le contexte d’ensemble de la théologie thomiste?
Les recherches actuelles de Kerr portent présentement
sur une autre question controversée : l’effort de la
théologie catholique du XXe siècle pour surmonter la
néo-scolastique du XIXe. Il étudie l’impact de ce dépassement sur la formation des théologiens catholiques et,
plus largement, sur la théologie catholique. C’est dans
le contexte de cette recherche que s’inscrit la conférence du professeur Kerr, intitulée Dépasser la néoscolastique : à quels coûts ?
Fergus Kerr est Fellow de la Société royale
d'Edimbourg (l’un des rares catholiques élus à
l'Académie nationale écossaise, fondée en 1783).
Il enseigne la philosophie et il est l’auteur de Theology
after Wittgenstein : Immortal Longings et de After Aquinas.

Fergus Kerr will be participating in the fall annual meeting of
the Canadian Jacques Maritain Association. His talk will be
the opening address to the conference. The goal is to have
several papers presented on Thomistic themes in themselves,
as well as Kerr’s treatment of them.

Fergus Kerr has written on disputed issues in Aquinas scholarship.
For example, should we regard
Aquinas as an ‘Aristotelian’? Many
contend that this label obscures
the neo-Platonist themes in works
such as Summa Theologiae. Moreover,
how should we read Aquinas’ ‘Five
Ways’? Some consider them strictly philosophical proofs,
judged solely on a rational basis. Others insist that they should
be read within the wider context of Aquinas’ theology.

Kerr’s research is currently focused on another controversial
issue: that twentieth century Catholic theology surmounted
nineteenth century neo-scholasticism. How did surmounting
neo-scholasticism affect the education of Catholic theologians and, more broadly, Catholic theology? Kerr will examine this in his talk entitled: “Surmounting Neo-Scholasticism:
A Cost/Benefit Analysis.”
Professor Kerr is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
(One of the few Catholics elected to the Scottish national
academy, founded 1783.) Fergus Kerr teaches philosophy and
is the author of Theology after Wittgenstein, Immortal Longings and
After Aquinas, the editor of New Blackfriars and an Honorary
