BACK HOME TO INDIA
“We normally fly to Mumbai using indirect flights as these are cheaper. Direct
flights to Mumbai take about 9 hours. Indirect flights add another 3 hours to flying time.
Most flights leave early in the morning from London and reach Mumbai around midnight.
We normally go there once a year, just for a relaxing holiday in a warmer climate.
Everything is different in India when compared to the UK. The temperature is so
much higher. In April, it was around 35° C. As the seasons are more well defined in India,
you can plan day-out picnics much better.
One thing that hits you most in India is the noise. Due to the hot climate, you need
to keep windows open as long as possible, which means noise from traffic and people can
be heard continuously. Indian drivers do not seem to have the road discipline we see in
Europe. Cars overtake from either side, left or right, which is very dangerous. Distances
between cars on roads are very close and it is frightening.
Most cities have motorised rickshaws, which burn paraffin, give off a lot of
pollution and are very noisy. The attraction of this transport is that rickshaws are cheaper
than taxis. Major cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Calcutta have a lot of traffic jams because
more and more people can afford cars.
When we go, we usually stay for at least 3 weeks, as a few days are needed to get
used to the heat and noise. Besides, we have lots of relations and we like to get together and
meet everyone. Hema went a second time this year for the wedding of a nephew.
