Louis Vuitton was born on August 4th 1821 in Achany, in the Jura region
in France. He died on February 27th 1892.
The Vuitton family had owned flour millers for many generations during.
Louis’s mother, Marie Coronnée Gaillard died when he was only 10 years
old. His father, François Xavier Vuitton married once more later. At this
time, baby’s births and deaths were very frequent. Louis got his name
from one of his brother who died at the young age of 8 months.
When he was 13 years old, he moved from Anchay to Paris. Louis walked
292 miles during a 2 years period managing jobs to feed his needs. He
began in Monsieur Maréchal’s box making workshop. In 1851, Napoléon
Bonaparte’s wife; Eugenie de Montijo hired Louis Vuitton as her personal
box-maker. Vuitton’s learning and success were instant. He definitely
specialised his work during good circumstances.
On April 22nd 1854, Louis Vuitton married Clémence Émilie Parriaux
who was 15 years younger than him. They had two children; Louise
Élisabeth and Georges born respectively in 1855 and in 1857. In 1854, he
left the Maréchal and opened his own business the same year.
