Abstract.
FROM RADIANCE TO ECLIPSE,
CASIMIR DELAVIGNE’S MEDIA AND INSTITUTIONAL IMAGE

This thesis, entitled « From radiance to eclipse, Casimir Delavigne’s media image », throws
light on the career of this now-forgotten author. It completes and continues the research
begun with the Colloque « Casimir Delavigne en son temps » (October 2011). It brings to the
fore Delavigne’s fame and the impact that his work had on the French public from 1818 to
1843. This study questions the perception of Delavigne and his work by his relatives and
contemporary artists, and by the press of his time and of the years following his death.
Contemporary newspapers are analysed to illustrate or explain what Delavigne embodied for
the French public at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The importance of this poet and
playwright called for study given his disappearance from most literary and cultural histories
from the twentieth century on. This study will propose hypotheses which will enable us to
understand how an author who was so famous could so quickly be forgotten. Chapter 1
analyses the intensity of Delavigne’s radiance and identifies the historical and political
context of his time ; Chapter 2 identifies the cultural context of the time of Delavigne in order
to situate him as an artist and understand his importance to French and/or European literary
heritage. Finally, chapter 3 consists of an analysis of the different types of reception of
Delavigne’s work. The ultimate goal of this thesis is to analyse in detail how the work of the
artist and criticism interact while also giving us an overall view of the author’s career.

Cette thèse intitulée « Du rayonnement à l’éclipse, l’image médiatique de Casimir
Delavigne » apporte un certain nombre d’informations concernant ce grand disparu de
l’histoire de la littérature française. Elle vient compléter et continuer les recherches
commencées à l’occasion du colloque « Casimir Delavigne en son temps » (Octobre 2011). Il
s’agit de prendre conscience de la célébrité de Delavigne et de l’impact que son œuvre a eu
sur le public français des années 1820-1830. Cette étude pose donc la question de la
perception de Delavigne et de son œuvre par son entourage familial et artistique, mais
également par la presse de son époque et des années qui ont suivi sa mort. De nombreux
articles de journaux de l’époque y sont analysés et viennent étayer ou expliquer ce que
représentait Delavigne pour le public français au début du XIXe siècle. L’importance que ce
poète et dramaturge a prise devait être confrontée au néant qui l’a frappé à partir du XXe
siècle. On trouvera dans l’étude présente des hypothèses permettant de comprendre comment
un auteur si célèbre a pu si rapidement tomber dans l’oubli. Le chapitre 1 analyse l’intensité
du rayonnement de Delavigne et permet de le situer dans le contexte historico-politique de
son époque ; le chapitre 2 permet de mieux cerner le paysage littéraire contemporain de
Delavigne afin de le situer en tant qu’artiste et voir en quoi il fait partie du patrimoine
littéraire français voire européen. Enfin, le chapitre 3 correspond à une analyse des différents
types de réception de l’œuvre de Delavigne. Au final, cette thèse analyse dans le détail
comment se répondent œuvre et presse critique mais permet également une vue d’ensemble de
la carrière de l’auteur.
