Martin Luther King became a famous civil rights activist when he began to make
speeches about racial segregation. His heart bled for his brothers in the South. He
chose to dedicate his life to equality. He knew black people were forbidden to vote
in the south of the USA and it hurt him deeply. He tried to deal peacefully with
the problem. He didn’t want people to fall into violence.

Martin Luther King, the famous black civil rights activist felt violence led to
nothing. He dreamt of a world where people would learn in the same school, eat in
the same restaurant, drink in the same fountains. He often knelt and prayed and
he never lost hope. Millions of people heard his « I have a dream speech » and it
meant they agreed with him.

On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to
make room for a white passenger. She took this decision as an American citizen because
she felt the law was not fair. Of course her action was forbidden in the South of the USA at
the time so she was sent to jail. She also lost her job and had to move to find a new job.
Parks' action was not the first of its kind because black people wanted to eat and drink in
the same restaurants as white people.

In the 60ies, African American hoped that their children could grow up in a more equal
society and go to the same school as the children.
They thought they had the same rights as the Whites to sit in front of buses. Rosa Parks'
civil disobedience led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The bus driver drove empty buses
for a year before buses were desegregated.
Parks became an international symbol of resistance to racial segregation. She fought with
famous civil rights leaders, including Martin Luther King, Jr., helping to launch him to
national prominence in the civil rights movement.
