L’IMPARFAIT?

The IMPARFAIT, or imperfect, is a verb
tense in the past. It allows one to:
•Describe activities that people USED
TO do as habit.
•Describe a state of mind or feeling.
•Set a scene in the past (to describe a
setting rather than a specific action).

Notice the distinction between the use of the
imparfait and that of the PASSÉ COMPOSÉ.
The P. C. is used to relate specific actions
that have been finished.
The imparfait relates non-specific actions
that were ongoing or habitual.
The imparfait also relates past states and
descriptions that are NOT specific actions.
