Development of fundamental skills in reasoning and critical thinking through the study of argument types, logical structures, criteria used in the
evaluation of arguments, and forms of fallacious reasoning.
PHI 1105 INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHICAL REASONING (3cr.)
Understanding the nature of philosophical enquiry. Understanding the place of philosophy in culture, science and theology. Appreciation of some of the
major philosophical questions regarding the self, knowledge and the world.
PHI 1110 ELEMENTARY LOGIC (3cr.)
This course is a general introduction to logic. The course introduces students to such basic logical concepts as deduction, induction, validity and
invalidity, fallacy, the relation of language to logic, and problems arising from workaday, rhetorical forms of argument.
PHI 1501 RAISONNEMENT ET PENSÉE CRITIQUE (UO) (3cr.)
Acquisition de compétences fondamentales en raisonnement et analyse critique des argumentations par l'étude des types d'argumentation, des
structures logiques, des critères employés dans l'évaluation des arguments et des sophismes.
PHI 1505 INTRODUCTION À LA PENSÉE PHILOSOPHIQUE (3cr.)
Nature de la recherche philosophique. Place de la philosophie au sein de la culture, parmi les sciences et par rapport à la théologie. Grandes
interrogations philosophiques (le soi, la connaissance, le monde...).
PHI 1510 LOGIQUE ÉLÉMENTAIRE (3cr.)
Introduction aux techniques formelles et informelles du raisonnement, incluant la syllogistique aristotélicienne. Autres thèmes possibles:
développements récents en syllogistique; introduction à la logique mathématique contemporaine; thèmes en logique informelle (faux raisonnements,
définitions, etc.); introduction à la logique philosophique.
PHI 2111 HISTORY OF ETHICS (3cr.)
When offered, this course would take one of the following three forms: I. Ancient and Medieval Ethics: Greek, Hellenistic, and Roman Ethics. Selection
from Plato's Dialogues, and Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. Selection from the Epicureans, Stoics, Neoplatonists, and Aquinas. II. Early Modern Ethics:
Renaissance Humanists, Hobbes, Descartes, Spinoza, Locke, and Hume. III. Post-Kantian Ethics. Selections from Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche,
J.S. Mill, T.H. Green. Selections from Moore, the positivists and post-modernists.
