L’imparfait
Imparfait means “imperfect”. The imperfect
tense is a past tense that indicates an action
that:
◦Did not have a specific beginning or end
___________________________________
◦Was habitual (meaning you did it on a regular
basis, something you used to do)
__________________________________
◦Was going on when another action/event
happened
___________________________________
Je dormais quand un voleur est entré dans la maison.
Il neigeait beaucoup. La neige scintillait.
Quand mon père était jeune, il jouait au football américain.

L’imparfait
The imperfect can be translated by:
◦“used to” + an infinitive:
Je jouais au tennis.
(I used to play tennis.)
◦“was” + verb (in “ing” form)
Je parlais avec ma mère quand tu as téléphoné.
(I was talking with my mother when you called.)
