Biographical note: John D. Murray
John Murray was appointed Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada in January 2008. In
this capacity, he is one of two deputy governors responsible for the Bank’s assessment of
domestic and international economic developments in support of monetary policy
decisions, conducted by the Canadian Economic Analysis and International Economic
Analysis departments. As a member of the Bank's Governing Council, he shares
responsibility for decisions with respect to monetary policy and financial system stability,
and for setting the strategic direction of the Bank.
Born in Toronto, Mr. Murray received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen's
University in 1971, as well as an MA in Economics and a PhD in Economics from
Princeton University in 1974 and 1977, respectively.
After completing his PhD, Mr. Murray taught at the University of British Columbia as an
assistant professor and at the University of North Carolina as a visiting assistant
professor. From 1985 to 1986, he also lectured at Princeton University.
Mr. Murray joined the Bank of Canada in 1980 as a Senior Economist with the Monetary
and Financial Analysis Department. In 1981, he was promoted to Research Officer and in
1982 he became Assistant Chief of the department. He served as Research Adviser in the
Monetary and Financial Analysis and International Departments from 1984 to 1987. In
1987, he was appointed Deputy Chief of the International Department, and in 1990,
Chief. Mr. Murray was appointed an Adviser to the Governor in January 2000.

John Murray a été nommé sous-gouverneur à la Banque du Canada en janvier 2008. À ce
titre, il est responsable, de concert avec un autre sous-gouverneur, de l’analyse de
l’évolution économique canadienne et internationale venant appuyer les décisions en
matière de politique monétaire de la Banque, qui est effectuée par le département des
Analyses de l’économie canadienne et celui des Analyses de l’économie internationale.
Avec les autres membres du Conseil de direction, il partage la responsabilité des
décisions relatives à la politique monétaire et à la stabilité du système financier ainsi que
de la formulation de l’orientation stratégique de la Banque.
Né à Toronto, M. Murray a d’abord étudié à l’Université Queen’s, qui lui a décerné en
1971 un baccalauréat en commerce. Puis, il a obtenu à l’Université de Princeton une
maîtrise en sciences économiques en 1974 et un doctorat dans la même discipline en
1977.
Après avoir terminé son doctorat, M. Murray a été professeur adjoint à l’Université de la
Colombie-Britannique, puis professeur adjoint invité à l’Université de la Caroline du
Nord. Durant l’année 1985-1986, il a occupé les fonctions de maître de conférences à
l’Université de Princeton.
M. Murray est entré en fonction à la Banque du Canada en 1980, en tant qu’économiste
principal au département des Études monétaires et financières. Il a été promu chargé de
recherche en 1981, puis chef adjoint de ce département en 1982. Il a ensuite occupé, de
1984 à 1987, le poste de conseiller en recherches au département des Études monétaires
et financières et au département des Relations internationales. Il a été nommé sous-chef
du département des Relations internationales en 1987 et chef, en 1990. Il est devenu
conseiller du gouverneur en janvier 2000.
