VERBES A PARTICULE ET VERBES PREPOSITIONNELS.
 Un verbe à particule ( phrasal verb ) est un groupe composé d’un noyau verbal et
d’un adverbe. Ce groupe est indissociable.
Ex : She grew up in india
La particule change le sens du verbe.
Ex : give = donner ; give up = abandonner
Les principales particules sont : about- across- along- around – away – back – down – in –
off – on – out – over – round – through – up.
Si le verbe est transitif, le complément peut se placer avant ou après la particule.
Ex : Could you please fill in this form/ fill this form in ?
Si le complément est long, on a : verbe + particule + complément.
Si le complément est un pronom ( me/ them/ that/ it…) , il se place toujours avant la
particule
Ex : he woke me up at seven this morning.
 Un verbe prépositionnel est un verbe transitif indirect : son complément est introduit
par une préposition.
Ex : My friends and peers indulge in superficial things.
 Il faut différencier particule et préposition. La particule est accentuée, la préposition
ne l’est pas. Dans les relatives, lorsque le relatif n’est pas exprimé, la préposition
reste associée au verbe prépositionnel dont elle dépend, se séparant ainsi du
complément qu’elle commande.
Ex : I am wrapped up in many superfical things my friends indulge in.
