Les médias Feuille de travail Les médias – La publicité 2A: À quoi sert la pub? (Grammaire) Infinitive constructions • pour / afin de + infinitive Expressions that need to be followed by an infinitive include pour and afin de, which both mean ‘to...’ or ‘in order to...’ Je regarde la pub pour m’informer, mais les grandes entreprises font de la publicité afin d’augmenter leurs profits. I watch adverts to keep myself informed, but large companies advertise in order to increase their profits. • à / de + infinitive Many verbs require either à or de before another verb in the infinitive (see below): La publicité sert à subventionner les services publics. Advertising helps to subsidise public services. Je refuse de regarder le spot. I refuse to watch the ad. • Certain set expressions also need de or à before the infinitive that follows: Le premier but de la publicité est d’informer le public. The first objective of advertising is to inform the public. • Modal verbs and the immediate future (aller + infinitive) are followed by an infinitive without à or de: On peut faire de la publicité en ligne, alors je vais vendre mes jeux interactifs sur e-Bay. You can advertise on line, so I’m going to sell my interactive games on e-Bay. de / d’ + infinitive à + infinitive aider à (to help someone to…) arrêter de (to stop doing…) commencer à (to begin to…) cesser de (to stop doing…) apprendre à (to learn to…) demander de (to ask someone to…) inviter à (to invite someone to…) décider de (to decide to…) servir à (… is used to…) refuser de (to refuse to…) arriver à (to manage to…) essayer de (to try to…) For example: Je n’arrive pas à comprendre pourquoi les grands publicitaires refusent de dire la vérité. I can’t manage to understand why the major advertisers refuse to tell the truth.
