US‐French Medicine:
Bridging the Gap
July 2013
EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE MODULE
Specifically designed for American Medical students who plan to visit French hospital. This
module aims to enable the students to:






Improve their command of French and widen their range of medical vocabulary
Become familiar with the health environment in a French context
Understand a range of medical texts and recognize implicit meaning
Demonstrate an awareness of the cultural contexts of French and some intercultural
competences where relevant
Express themselves effectively in French, engaging in conversations, providing and
obtaining information and exchanging ideas with a degree of flexibility an spontaneity
Develop strategies for coping with unfamiliar language or unexpected responses, such as
asking for repetition or clarification, listening or looking for key words, and using
previous knowledge, context and other clues to interpret meaning of text or discourse
A particular emphasis will be done on public health.
CLASS DELIVERY AND TEACHING METHODS
Although every class is designed with the consideration of the above objectives, the
structure of particular sessions may vary. The general approach is communicative.
The language is dealt with in social situations and students are encouraged to participate as
much as possible.
Other teaching approaches such as presenting a certain issue will be applied where
appropriate. Students are expected to be well prepared and contribute to classroom
discussions and group activities.
French is used for communication in class.
Intercultural perspectives, health and medical habits
LANGUAGE FUNCTIONS – PRAGMATICS
 Interacting on personal issues: identity, studies
 Communicating medical information to health professionals
 Explaining health related problems to a patient
 Asking and giving information about vital signs, mental states
 Describing symptoms
 Making and understanding health-related requests
 Giving medical advice to a patient
 Reading and understanding the main points of French medical press
 Writing medical reports, and letters
 Understanding non-specialised health related articles
GRAMMAR AND USE OF LANGUAGE
Revision and consolidation of grammar aspects necessary in medical situations
(asking questions, giving advice, reassuring people, explaining medical condition…)
INTERCULTURAL ASPECT
Each topic will be examined with an intercultural approach.
How French and American doctors deal with similar problems (medical insurance, healthcare
and disadvantaged population, E.R., etc.)
Tailor-made booklets to be given in class.
