Les verbes pronominaux
Le verbe réfléchi
The reflexive verb is called le verbe pronominal in French. In general, the reflexive
verb denotes that an action is applied to the subject of the verb.
Exemples: Je regarde quelqu’un (I look at someone).
Je me regarde (I look at myself).
One can thus see the difference between regarder and its reflexive equivalent se
regarder. However, there are some verbs in French, which employ the reflexive form
even though the action does not apply to the subject. For example: se batter (to
fight). One does not fight oneself, yet the reflexive form is used in French because
batter means to beat someone. Therefore, one must bear in mind that some French
verbs employ the reflexive form without reflexive action.
The present tense of the reflexive vers is modeled on se regarder.
je me regarde nous nous regardons
tu te regardes vous vous regardez
il se regarde ils se regardent
elle se regarde elles se regardent
