The Innovation Hub, P.O.Box 66, Pretoria 0087, mailto:[email protected] THE ORIGIN AND STABILISATION OF THE KAAPVAAL CRATON LITHOSPHERE Creating knowledge Training Sharing Promoting January 2013 - January 2016 This project aims at understanding the generation and differentiation of the Archaen continental lithosphere. This evolution implies transfers of heat-producing elements from the mantle to the crust and therefore the redistribution of those elements within the lithosphere. The formation of a boyant felsic crust which accumulated to form the continental crust, has allowed for recycling of this crustal material through partial melting events. This has further redistributed heat-producing elements. Uranium and Thorium are among the most important heat-producing elements; their redistributions are key for identifying economic potential. In consequence, this project aims at answering fundamental questions (how the continental crust has been generated and stabilised), but also concrete questions (metallogeny of the uranium). Context We know that continental crust was formed mostly during the Archean period (4.0 – 2.5 Ga); however uncertainty exists about the evolution of early tectonics on earth and on the on the tectonic setting within which this crust was produced and recycled. Today, plate tectonics and in particularity subduction, play a key role in driving geodynamics forces on earth. However, some subduction elements are completely absent in the Archean rock record. This suggests the existence of important differences in geodynamics processes during this key period. Objectives and the projects developed Objective 1: The distribution and redistribution of heatproducing elements in the crust, a result of the initial crustal accretion (plutonic and tectonic), and the subsequent intracrustal recycling. - Description at regional level of the “anatomy” and of the continental Kaapvaal structure; Intra-crustal redistribution of generating heat elements – modalities of Archean crustal fusion; Study of magma origin; France (Jean François Moyen) Objective 2: A special emphasis on uranium and U-bearing plutons - Spatial distribution at various scales of uranium; Objective 3: Coupling of the evolution of the crust, and the subcontinental lithospheric mantle that allows it to survive through time. - Laboratoire Magmas et volcans - CBMS (UMR 6524 CNRS) Unité Géosciences Rennes (UMR 6118- CNRS) Unité géologie et gestion des ressources minérales et énergétiques (UMR 7566 – CNRS) Laboratoire transferts lithospériques South Africa (Gary Stevens) Centre for Crustal Petrology, Department of Earth Sciences, Stellenbosch University Study of lithospheric samples from early kimberlitic volcanos; Coupling of the mantle and affluent rocks studies to produce a comprehensive view of the craton stratification (chemically but also chronologically) Study of the origin and the rock cycle of some lateArchean “granitoïdes” Bureau conjoint CNRS-IRD en Afrique australe @ The Innovation Hub, P.O.Box 66, Pretoria 0087, mailto:[email protected]
