Setting, Narrative Context, and Historical Background
Although released as the second entry in the series, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 takes place in
November 1987, predating the events of the original game set in 1993. Players take control
of Jeremy Fitzgerald, a newly hired night-shift security guard tasked with monitoring the
grand re-opening of the upgraded Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza family restaurant from 12:00 AM
to 6:00 AM. FNAF 2
In an attempt to rebuild their corporate reputation after previous mysterious disappearances
and health violations, Fazbear Entertainment invested heavily in cutting-edge technology.
The new facility featured "Toy" animatronics—sleek, brightly painted, kid-friendly versions of
classic characters equipped with advanced facial recognition software connected directly to
local criminal databases. According to phone calls recorded by the previous night guard
(affectionately dubbed "Phone Guy"), these security measures were designed to identify
potential threats and ensure complete child safety.
However, as night falls, the advanced facial recognition systems malfunction severely. The
Toy animatronics perceive adults—particularly night-shift security guards—as hostile
intruders or endoskeletons missing their protective suit costumes. Compounding this danger,
the original, heavily damaged "Withered" animatronics from the previous location remain
stored in the back Parts/Service room for spare components. Driven by haunting paranormal
energy, both generations of animatronics roam the facility after midnight, seeking to force the
security guard into an empty Freddy Fazbear suit, resulting in instant death.
