Quarter valves are the kind of valves that only require a quarter turn of the disc
to fully open or fully close the flow. In order to transition from the completely
open to the fully closed position, quarter turn valves simply need to be rotated
90 degrees. They are also known as fast-acting valves for this reason.
The shape and movement of the plug give the butterfly valve its name.
The plug has a rod running through it and is formed like a disc, giving it the
appearance of wings. The disc rotates by a quarter when the rod is turned,
falling perpendicular to the flow and stopping it. The disc is rotated back to its
original position, which is away from the flow in order to restart the flow. To
regulate the flow, the valve can also be opened gradually.
Advantages of Butterfly Valve:
• A high-pressure rebound follows the low-pressure decrease.
• Can be installed/removed easily without disrupting the piping
system
• Costs less because there is less raw material.
• Design is small & requires little room.
• Durable
• Easy to install and operate
• Energy efficiency has improved.
• Good for on/off and throttling
• Good for slurries
• Large seating area
• Larger sizes are available.
• Less assistance is required.
• Lightweight
• Low operation torque allows for simple operation.
• Low-pressure drop.
• Maintenance is easier, inexpensive and less required.
• No gas pockets
• Numerous actuation methods are available.
• Piping system easily supports the weight.
• Quick operation; little time spent opening or closing.
• Quite accurate.
• Various seat and disc materials are available.
