Mohammed BENGHANEM GHARBI
Mohammed Benghanem Gharbi is professor of Nephrology at the Faculty of Medicine and
the University Hospital of Casablanca, Morocco. Clinician nephrologist, he is particularly interested
in acute renal failure, epidemiology of chronic kidney disease and vascular accesses.
He was involved in the development of several structural project of Nephrology in Morocco
(National program of ESRD, national registry, CKD survey, regional schema of health care
providing, best practice clinical guidelines, promotion of organ donation…).
He is the Chair of ISN – African Regional Board Committee, Member of the African
Association of Nephrology Board and past-president of the Moroccan Society of Nephrology.
Yvanie CAILLÉ
Yvanie Caillé is the founder and the Executive director of Renaloo, a non profit organization
which helps patients living with kidney disease, dialysis and transplant. She is an engineer in
Applied Mathematics and holds a Master degree in Patient Education.
She co-founded and ran the Greffe de Vie Foundation, then the Pierre and Marie Curie
University Foundation. Between 2005 and 2011, she sat on the Advisory Board of the French
Biomedicine Agency. She’s been living with kidney disease since the age of 12.

John DAVIS
John Davis is the Chief Executive Officer of Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes
or KDIGO. He serves as a Trustee of the corporation registered in Belgium as a Foundation in the
Public Interest. He has held those positions since 2004.
KDIGO is in its third year of independence and self-governance. John leads the
organization with three other staff members and hundreds of volunteer nephrology thought leaders
from around the world. KDIGO is a global organization dedicated to developing and implementing
evidence based clinical practice guidelines in all phases of kidney disease and its treatment.
As CEO, John directs the business affairs, resource development, strategic planning and
collaboration programs of the organization. KDIGO has emerged under his leadership as a truly
effective and independent part of the global kidney community. KDIGO is dedicated solely to
patients and its mission of translating the best and latest global science into practical treatment
recommendations for clinicians everywhere in the world.
John has had more than 30 years experience in the world of medical not-for-profit. Until
2011, he was the Chief Executive Officer of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), a US charity.
He led NKF’s innovations in education, communication, program development, program
implementation, events and fund raising in the United States and in other countries. Under his
leadership NKF became one of the most effective and respected kidney organizations in the world.
He has written extensively on all aspects of kidney disease; its detection, treatment and prevention.
He has made hundreds of presentations to audiences. He has visited over 25 countries and knows
key opinion leaders throughout the global kidney and transplantation communities.
Over his career, John has raised over $200,000,000 for programs in kidney disease and
transplantation including testing 170,000 people for kidney disease in the US, Japan and Mexico;
providing CME educational programs to over 45,000 physicians and other professionals; bringing
transplant athletics to the US, recognizing donor families and creating the effort to bring evidence
based clinical practice guidelines to the field of kidney disease.
Timur ERK
Born in 1944, Timur Erk has received his Dipl. Engineering degree in chemical engineering
in Germany after completing his high school education at the German High School in Istanbul,
Turkey. Mr. Erk had taken an active role in establishment of the Turkish Chemical Manufacturers
Association (TCMA) during his professional life as an industrialist in chemical industry since 1971.
He served as a Board Member of the TCMA for several years and was the vice chairman of TCMA
for eight years prior to his election as the president of TCMA in February 2000. In addition to his
duties at the TCMA, Mr. Erk also serves as the Chairman of the Chemical Industry Assembly of the
Union of Turkish Chambers of Industry, Trade and Exchanges (TOBB) and Chairman of the
Turkish Chemical Sector Platform.
As a founder member of the Yesilyurt-Istanbul Lions Club since 1977, Timur Erk has served
as the first District Governor of the 118 E-Lions District in the 1993-1994 period. Mr. Erk was the
council Chairperson of the Turkish Lions Clubs during 1996-1997.
Timur Erk is the founder and the president of the Turkish Kidney Foundation for 28 years,
past-presidents of Turkish Children In-Need-Of Shelter Foundation and Turkish Heart Foundation,
immediate past chairman of the Turkish Federation of Sectoral Associations (SEDEFED), vicechairman of the Turkish Third Sector Foundation (TUSEV) and member of the Turkish Olympic
Committee.
Currently Mr. Erk serves at two important international positions; namely, as a board
member of the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) and as Board member of the
International Federation Kidney Foundations (IFKF). He was also the chairman of the 10th annual
meeting of the IFKF which was held in Istanbul on May 2009. During IFKF Istanbul meeting, Mr
Erk was elected as the president of IFKF for the term of 2011-2013.
Timur Erk is married and father of a young man. He speaks English and German.
Sophie FAVÉ
Sophie FAVE has been the coordinator of the TIRCEL health network since 2004.
This network coordinates the care pathway (involving many disciplines) of over 1000
people affected by chronic kidney disease in Rhone-Alps Region.
She was trained as a paediatric nurse. She holds a degree in ethics and a Master 2 in
« philosophy of health » as well as a doctorate in public health which she got in 2013.
She is now particularly interested in the relationship between patients and caregivers in the
area of chronic diseases, and in the way of integrating the patients’ treatment pathway in their
everyday lives.
She takes part in teaching Ethics to student nurses and in teaching « care pathway » at
Claude Bernard University Lyon 1.

Guillermo Garcia-Garcia
Guillermo Garcia-Garcia, M.D. FACP, FASN, graduated from the University of
Guadalajara, School of Medicine, Mexico (1974), He did his Fellowship in Nephrology at the
University of Cincinnati, USA (1981). He is Professor of Nephrology and Director, Nephology
Department, at the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara, University of Guadalajara Health Sciences
Center.
He is the Chair of the ISN Committee on Kidney Health in Disadvantaged Populations,
President of the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF) and Co-Chair of the World
Kidney Day Steering Committee.
He has pioneered CKD detection and treatment in Mexico. In 2006, he began a large CKD
screening and treatment program in Jalisco, in collaboration with the University of Alberta,
Edmonton, Canada. He has developed two on-line educational programs for the training of health
professionals on CKD prevention, and introduced this program within the academic curriculum of
the University of Guadalajara, School of Medicine.
Pascal HOUILLIER
Pascal Houillier is currently Professor of Physiology at Paris Descartes University in Paris,
France.
He previously held the post of Professor of Physiology at Pierre et Marie Curie University
from 1997 to 2003.
His early training was in Poitiers and then in Paris, subsequently graduating as a Medical
Doctor in 1990. He was awarded his PhD in 1996.
His clinical interests lie mainly in the field of diagnosis and management of mineral and
electrolyte disorders and management of chronic kidney disease.
His research activities include pathophysiology and genetics of inherited tubular
dysfunctions as well as physiology and hormonal control of renal tubular electrolyte transports.
He has published on various aspects of renal physiology, pathophysiology, and renal tubular
disorders. He is on the scientific council of the French National Institute for Biomedical Research,
INSERM.
Michel JADOUL
Prof. M. Jadoul, born in 1958, is married and has 3 children. He received his MD degree in
1983 at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), Brussels, Belgium. His mentor was Professor
Charles van Ypersele. He further spent a year in Utrecht, The Netherlands (Prof. Dorhout Mees and
Koomans). He is chairing the Department of Nephrology of the Cliniques Univ. St Luc since 2003,
and is Full Clinical Professor at UCL. His clinical activities include the follow-up of hemodialysis
and CKD patients. His main research interests have included beta2m amyloidosis, hepatitis C and
other complications (falls, bone fractures, sudden death a.o.) in Hemodialysis patients, as well as
cardiovascular complications after kidney transplantation.
He has (co)-authored over 180 scientific papers (H index: 36), most of them published in
major nephrology journals. He is an associate editor of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases
(AJKD) and theme Editor of Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation (NDT). He is country coinvestigator for the Dialysis Outcomes Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS) (2001-…). He received in
2008 the international distinguished medal of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). He is a
member of the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) Executive Committee (2010….), member of the Council (2013-….) of the European Renal Association-European Dialysis and
Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA and Editor of NDT-educational (2013-…).
Kam KALANTAR-ZADEH
Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh, (a.k.a. Dr Kam Kalantar) studied medicine in Germany and
received MPH and PhD degrees in Epidemiology from Univ. California Berkeley, School of Public
Health. He is trained in SUNY Brooklyn and UCSF and is triple board certified in Internal
Medicine, Nephrology and Pediatrics. Dr. Kalantar has authored over 400 publications and has
several NIH grants. He is currently the chief of Nephrology & Hypertension at Univ. California
Irvine and President of International Society of Renal Nutrition & Metabolism.

Charles Lloyd Kernahan
Charles Kernahan holds non-executive board responsibilities including: Vice Chair to the
Board of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC), Secretary and Treasurer of the
International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF). He is also Co Chair of a UK chronic
disease initiative and a steering group member for the associated international programme called
Kidney Health for Life.
Until September 2012 he was the Chief Executive of Kidney Research UK, a National
Medical Research Charity. Charles now acts as an independent consultant and advisor to
commercial and not for profit organisations in healthcare and related sectors and was a Public and
Patient Engagement member for specialised commissioning clinical reference groups.
Charles recently acted as Interim Chief Executive for the AMRC, during the period of
search for a replacement CEO. His current executive roles include the following:

He qualified in Clinical Chemistry and Microbial Biochemistry and worked in the NHS
before moving to the healthcare industry sector in 1979. He attended business schools in the USA at
the University of Virginia and Harvard and has held senior executive positions with Baxter
Healthcare, Omnicare plc, Allied Healthcare and Bristol Myers Squibb at UK and International
level.
Charles has in the past held positions of Non-Executive Director to the Board and Vice
Chair of the Risk and Audit Committee for the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory
Agency (MHRA) and as a Non-Executive Director with responsibility for Quality and Patient
Safety, for a Primary Care Trust. He has also acted in the past as an advisor to the Department of
Health and Healthcare Industry on Pharmacy Regulation and Prescribing Practice.
Joel D. KOPPLE
Joel D. Kopple, M.D. is Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the David Geffen
School of Medicine at UCLA and the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and was Chief of
the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for 25 years. Dr.
Kopple’s research focus has been on protein and amino acid metabolism in health and disease,
skeletal muscle and physical exercise training, and on the nutritional and metabolic disorders in
acute and chronic kidney disease and kidney failure and their treatment.
He has published research on the disorders of protein, energy, vitamin, and mineral
metabolism and requirements in kidney insufficiency and kidney failure. He has published over
500 peer reviewed manuscripts, book chapters and reviews, and edited or co-edited many
proceedings as well as co-editing three editions of the book, “Nutritional Management of Renal
Disease”. The last edition was published in January, 2013. His contributions have been
recognized by many honors and awards including three honorary university doctorate degrees,
the David M. Hume award of the National Kidney Foundation, the E. V. McCollum Award and
the Robert H. Herman Award, both of the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, the Annual
Rhoads Lecture of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, the Louis Pasteur
Medal and Award of the University of Strasbourg (France), the Thomas Addis Medal of the
International Society for Renal Nutrition and Metabolism, the Malpighi Medal of the University
of Messina, (Italy), the Sándor Korányi Award of the Hungarian Society of Nephrology, and the
Belding Scribner Award of the American Society of Nephrology. He is a Past–President of the
National Kidney Foundation, the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition
(ASPEN), the International Society for Renal Nutrition and Metabolism, the International
Society for Renal Nutrition and Metabolism and the Council of American Kidney Societies.
He has played a seminal role in founding the International Society for Renal Nutrition
and Metabolism, The International Federation of Kidney Foundations and World Kidney Day,
and served a central role in founding the Rhoads Research Foundation of ASPEN and the
National Kidney Disease Education Program (NKDEP) of the NIH. The National Kidney
Foundation Council on Renal Nutrition has established the annual Joel D. Kopple Lectureship
and Award, and The International Federation of Kidney Foundations has also established an
annual Joel D. Kopple Award.

Wan Tin LEE

Foundation of Malaysia.
He is married with 3 children. He attended primary school and secondary school at St.

Mitra Mahdavi-Mazdeh is a professor in the division of nephrology at Tehran University of

She has been director of Iranian Tissue Bank Research Center since 2007. Her major
research interests lie in the epidemiologic features of RRT especially transplantation in developing

Olivier MORANNE
Doctor Olivier Moranne studied in the Medicine University in Tours (France) and
specialised in Nephrology in Lille University. He got is PhD in Epidemiology & Public Health from
Paris University (Risks factors of progression and complication of CKD). He acted as a volonteer
civil servant as a Physician in primary care In Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu. Currently a Nephrologist
in the Nephrology-Dialysis-Transplant department of the Medicine University of Nice, he is an

Mark MURPHY
Mark Murphy is the Chief Executive of the Irish Kidney Association, (IKA) for over 13
years. He has over 30 years personal experience as a carer of Patients with End Stage Renal
Disease.
Mark is the Vice President of the European Kidney Patients Federation (EKPF) where he is
an active participant in the European Kidney Health Alliance based in Brussels.
He has served as a member of the ‘World Kidney Day’ Steering Committee for the
International Federation of Kidney Foundations. He has also completed his 4 year term of office as
a Council Member of the World Transplant Games Federation (WTGF).
Leo NEDERVEEN
Leo Nederveen has graduated as a Public Health Nutritionist (MSc) at the Wageningen
University (The Netherlands) with over 20 years of experience in providing technical cooperation in
the field of public health, food and nutrition and NCDs.
He first joined the World Health Organization in 1990, supporting Cape Verde and the
Dominican Republic with the preparation and implementation of national food and nutrition plans.
From 1998 to 2002 he worked for PAHO/WHO's "Project for the Development of Healthy Settings"
in Loja, Ecuador, and organized the Third Meeting of the Latin American Network of Health
Promoting Schools in Quito. In Peru, from 2003 to 2007, he was responsible for the components of
Health Promotion and Human Resources for Health of the European Union supported Project for
the Modernization of the Health Sector.
From 2007 he has worked on the topics of home grown school feeding and nutrition
education for the World Food Programme (HQ) and the Partnership for Child Development of the
Imperial College London.
Mr Nederveen currently works in the Department of Prevention of Noncommunicable
Diseases of the Headquarters of WHO in Geneva. His responsibilities include assisting countries in
the implementation of the Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, in particular with
respect to population-based prevention of childhood obesity, salt reduction and physical activity
promotion.
Ayse ONAT
Born in 1975. After high school graduation, attended AFS Intercultural Exchange Program
and also graduated from Beaver Dam High Scool, Wisconsin, USA.
Have a undergraduate degree of Public Finance from Istanbul University Faculty of Political
Sciences (1998) and also a graduate degree of Health Institutions Management Graduate Program
of Istanbul University School of Business Administration (2010).

Tom OOSTROM
Tom Oostrom (1964) has been Managing Director of the Dutch Kidney Foundation since
2010. He started as head of the policy section in 2005. With the motto ‘Life comes first’ the Kidney
Foundation gives everything to make sure kidney patients survive ánd their quality of life improves.
Tom Oostrom learned from practice: he started out as a nurse. His drive is to make a real difference
for kidney patients, to help make their lives livable. This is necessary, because a renal disease is
severe and makes a deep impact in someone’s life.
Since 2012 Oostrom has been the chair of the cooperating healthcare funds
(Samenwerkende Gezondheidsfondsen) in which 20 large funds are united. He is also a member of
the Steering committee Life Sciences & Health and is committed to promote active involvement of
healthcare funds in the topsector policy of the department of Economic Affairs in The Netherlands.
Oostrom feels healthcare funds shouldn't only invest in regular scientific research, but also dare to
tie themselves to tangible, daring targets such as the portable artificial kidney.
In Leiden Oostrom studied to become a nurse (1986). He studied Policy & Management in
Healthcare at Erasmus University Rotterdam (1991). During his studies he worked as a district
nurse.
Oostrom lives in Montfoort with his partner and their two sons.
Paul SHAY
Paul Shay has served The Kidney Foundation of Canada as National Executive Director
since 2008. He possess over two decades of senior management experience leading decentralized
charitable organizations.

Benedicte STENGEL
Benedicte Stengel graduated from medical school in Paris (France) and has a PhD in
Epidemiology and Public Health from Paris-Sud University. She joined the National Institute of
Health and Medical Research as a research fellow in epidemiology in 1989. In 2000, she spent a
sabbatical year at the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research, affiliated
with Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (US).
Benedicte Stengel is presently research director and head of the research team
"Epidemiology and Translational Research in chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease"
within the Inserm Center for Research in Epidemiology and Population Health in Villejuif.
She contributed to set up the national REIN (Renal Epidemiology and Information Network)
end-stage renal disease registry in France, and coordinates the national CKD (Chronic Kidney
Disease)-REIN cohort, winner of the Cohort-Investment for the future tender launched in 2010.
She is involved in the steering committee of several international consortium including the Chronic
Kidney Disease-Prognosis Consortium and the CKD Outcomes and Practice Pattern study
(CKDopps).

Peter STOREY
Peter Storey started professional life as a peripatetic instrumental teacher working in London
schools. He then became a music specialist with the Performing Right Society for more than a
decade before moving to Interflora in Lincolnshire as their Head of Membership. After achieving
an MBA with distinction in 1998, he moved into the charities sector with the Royal National
Institute of Blind People, where he became Head of Fundraising Strategy in 2000. He accepted a
role with Kidney Research UK in 2005 and is currently the Director of Communications.
Peter is responsible for the Charity’s brand development, marketing strategy,
communications, media relations and public affairs. He has also managed telephone fundraising,
legacy marketing, community fundraising, and supporter acquisition and development through
multi-channel direct marketing. He has run various change projects including driving a major shift
from transactional fundraising to a supporter-focus strategy.
In his spare time Peter is a jazz saxophonist, leading and playing in bands in the Midlands.
Other interests include road cycling and cooking. He lives with his family in Lincolnshire.

Christoph WANNER
Christoph Wanner, M.D., is Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Nephrology
and Hypertension at the University Hospital of Würzburg, Germany. Dr. Wanner’s areas of interest
are metabolism, dyslipidemia, inflammation and cardiovascular disease in patients with kidney
disease.
He has served as the principal investigator of the 4D Study and as a steering committee
member and central European coordinator of the SHARP Study.
He has published more than 500 articles of whom 465 are cited in pub-med (HF 57). He
serves as editor-in chief for the Journal of Renal Nutrition as well as subject editor and member of
the editorial review boards of many journals.
Dr. Wanner is the immediate past-president of the International Society of Renal Nutrition
and Metabolism (ISRNM), a council member of the ERA-EDTA (European Renal Association –
European Dialysis and Transplant association) and chair of the European Renal Registry.
He is also a board member of the ERBP (European Renal Best Practice) initiative, an
executive officer of KDIGO (Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcome) and co-chair of a
guideline work group on dyslipidemia.
Dr. Wanner is a honorary member of the Polish Society of Nephrology and recently received
a doctor honoris causa from the Charles University Prague.
Anne WILSON
Anne Wilson Dip. Wel. Studs. BA. Human Services; Grad Dip. Ad. Health; EPNL Stanford;
Anne Wilson joined Kidney Health Australia as CEO in January 2003 and was appointed
Managing Director in June 2009. Prior to joining Kidney Health Australia, Anne was CEO of
Asthma Australia prior to that held senior management positions with MS Victoria, VicDeaf and Oz
Child. Anne’s early career was spent working in education in the delivery of social work services
to disadvantaged schools. She is passionate about social justice and issues of access and equity in
health service delivery.
In 2013 Anne joined the Leadership Team of the International Kidney Cancer Coalition and
in addition to her professional commitments, Anne has served as Director on two other not-forprofit Boards. She is a sitting member of the Federal Government Advisory Council for the
Australian Organ and Tissue Authority, a member of the Governance Committee of the National
Organ Matching Service; a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management; Member of the
Australian Institute of Company Directors and former Secretary/Treasurer of the International
Federation of Kidney Foundations.
In 2008 Anne was awarded the Not for Profit (NFP) CEO of the Year Award for Australia
and New Zealand.
