Guidelines for Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)
2016-17 International Student Scholarship for Short-Term Study in Japan
1. Objective
This program, administered by Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), promotes student exchange
programs between Japanese and overseas universities, thereby mutually enhancing international student
exchanges while promoting international understanding and friendship.
2. Qualifications and Conditions
This scholarship is available to the students enrolled in a regular course of study at colleges and universities
overseas, who are:
(1) enrolled at universities having exchange programs with Japanese universities and to be accepted by a host
university in Japan.
(2) demonstrating excellence in academic performance and non-academic activities at their universities, and have
at least a 2.30 (Full point 3.0) grade points during the previous academic year as calculated in the
following method, or are determined to have an equivalent academic ability documented by the
reference letter.
(3) lacking the financial means to study in Japan.
(4) expected to return to their home institution to continue their study or consequently obtain a degree from
the institution after completing their study period in Japan.
(5) expected to qualify for a College Student Visa to study in Japan.
How to calculate grade points
*Please calculate the grade point of the previous academic year by the formula below.

* If your university does not use a credit system, you may count the number of courses instead of the number of credits.
Calculation formula
Round off to the third decimal place
1. Add all of the following:

2. Divide the total by the number of credits registered during the previous academic year (including failed courses)
(6) Students whose total amount of other scholarships for study in Japan does not exceed this monthly stipend,
80,000 yen per month
3. Amount of the scholarship
Monthly stipend: 80,000 yen per month
4. Term of payment
From 1 to 12 months, according to the students’ period of study at Rikkyo University as a Special
International Student
5. Required documents
All documents must be submitted to Office of Study Abroad Program, the College of Intercultural
Communication at Rikkyo University at saekim@rikkyo.ac.jp via email, and must be written either in Japanese
or English. Documents in other languages must be attached with English or Japanese translation.
(1) Application for JASSO International Student Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan
to be completed by the applicant with the signature of an authorized person at the applicant's home
institution
*Note: It came to our attention that some applicants have failed to complete the Application form properly,
especially grade points. We do not accept the incomplete document and would not consider the
application if applicants failed to provide the required information. If you have difficulty calculating
grade points (in case of freshman students, particularly), then please submit the additional letter issued by
home university confirming that the applicants have sufficient level of academic qualification (such as
top 10% of his/her class etc.).
(2) One letter of recommendation that verifies the applicant's academic ability as well as the eligibility for the
JASSO scholarship.
(3) Academic transcripts for the previous academic year including all enrolled courses, credits, (irrespective of
passed or failed).
(*Note: The April applicants do not need to submit the transcript again if appropriate transcript is already
submitted and required information is included.)
6. Application schedule for Fall admission
Deadline: Friday, March 31, 2017 (Japanese Time)
(Electric documents are acceptable, however, original hardcopies must be sent eventually by post).
Notification of result: Mid July, 2017
