ANG 101 APPLIED ENGLISH GRAMMAR

Description
ANG 101 provides a descriptive analysis of the principal aspects of the English grammar
system. ANG 101 also provides students with the opportunity to apply their acquired
grammatical knowledge to prescriptive exercises based on common grammatical and
syntactical, errors in English.
Objectives
● The student will be able to identify, describe, classify, and analyze the parts of speech and
the syntactic elements of the English language.
● The student will be able to define grammatical terms and apply the definitions to analyses of
common grammatical errors in English.
● The student will be able to identify, label, correct, and justify the correction of basic
grammatical and syntactical errors for professional purposes such as TESL and editing and
revising texts in the fields of translation and technical writing.
Content
● The Parts of Speech
■ nouns, noun phrases, and pronouns
■ modifiers
■ linking and action verbs, verb phrases
■ principal parts of verbs
■ clauses, verbals, and verbal phrases
● Sentence Structure
■ subject, direct object of verb, indirect object of verb, subject complements, and
object complements
■ five basic sentence patterns
Procedure
Lectures, readings, practice exercises, in-class correction, tests.
Workload
Weekly readings and exercises, 3 tests, final exam.
