Summary:
The purpose of this document is to offer a pedagogic tool for the interpretation
of magnetic resonance imaging of the equine carpus.
First, the anatomy of the carpus and the basis of MRI are described. Then,
twenty-four reference images from healthy isolated limbs, produced with a low-field
magnet, are presented and explained, demonstrating the interest of MRI in the
investigation of this area. Furthermore, a pedagogic CD-ROM with nine series of
carpus reference MRIs is supplied with the printed document, allowing a dynamic
and didactic visualization of 187 images, The wide variety of anatomical planes and
sequences for image acquisition is illustrated, showing their complementarity for the
assessment of soft tissues and bones of the carpus.
Finally, the interests and limits of MRI compared to other imaging techniques,
and recent advanced MRI systems as standing systems and high-field magnets are
discussed, relying on bibliographic data.
