Étude de la carte p. 136.
Nature/topic/information.
What do the colors stand for ?
The States in blue represent the States where there is currently no death penalty in place. The States in yellow represent the
States where no death penalty has been issued since 1976. Finally the green States indicate that the death penalty has been
declared unconstitutional.
The orange States belong to the category of those which have implemented a death penalty as a punishment since 1976. They
make up the majority of the United States of America.
What can you conclude about death penalty in the USA ?
These statistics clearly show the Americans agree with the use of the death penalty as a just punishment for certain crimes.
For the majority of the States it is a punishment that has been recently used and no doubt that it will continue to be put into
use. However, there are a certain number of States, although it is only a handful that does not believe in the death penalty.
These States are mostly North Eastern States.
Ce sont ces éléments qui vont composer la trace écrite.
Point culture : the political system in the USA.
Why do you think there is such discrepancy between the states ?
Comparison with France : is it possible that a region uses death penalty and another not ? Why ? Every region in France has
the same rules with the same rights.
Why is it possible in the United States? They have a particular political system. The complete country has a constitution with
rules and rights that every states has to respect, however, unlike in France, each state can create other rules and they can be
completely different from another state (this is the case of death penalty).
