Le Défi Canderel est une campagne de financement pour la recherche sur le cancer. Plusieurs activités
connexes sont au programme toute l’année se terminant par la course dans les rues du centre-ville. Tous
les fonds amassés sont distribués aux centres de recherche et utilisés de façon discrétionnaire. | The Défi
Canderel, encompasses year-round fund raising for cancer research which culminates in the annual run.
All the funds were, and are, offered without restrictions so that scientists can pursue their work unfettered
by bureaucracy.

Les fonds amassés pour le Défi Canderel sont remis au Centre de recherche sur le cancer Goodman de
l’Université McGill et à l’Institut du cancer de Montréal de l’Université de Montréal. En 2014, le Défi a célébré
ses 25 ans et jusqu’à présent a permis de récolter plus de 10 millions de dollars pour la recherche sur le

Depuis mon installation à titre de gouverneur général, j’invite les Canadiennes et Canadiens à imaginer
des moyens pour édifier une nation toujours plus avertie et bienveillante. Dans cette optique, je pense
que nous pouvons nous tourner vers des gens comme Jonathan Wener, fondateur du Défi Canderel,
pour puiser une bonne dose d’inspiration. | En 1990, je faisais partie d’un petit groupe d’individus
qui ont pris part à la première édition de cet événement. Depuis, l’initiative de Jonathan Wener a pris
de l’ampleur et permis de recueillir des millions de dollars en vue d’appuyer le Centre de recherche
sur le cancer Rosalind et Morris Goodman et l’Institut du cancer de Montréal. Grâce à sa vision,

Since my installation as governor general of Canada, I have invited Canadians to imagine new ways of
building a smarter, more caring nation. And I think we can turn to people like Jonathan Wener, founder of
the Défi Canderel, for inspiration in that regard. | In 1990, I was one of a small group of individuals who
took part in the first edition of this event. Since then, Jonathan Wener’s initiative has grown exponentially
and has raised millions of dollars in support of the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Research
Centre and the Institut du cancer de Montréal. Thanks to his vision, to the businesses that support it, and
to the participants who donate their time and efforts, Canadians across the country can envision a future

ce qu’a réussi M. Jonathan Wener en fondant, en 1989, le Défi Canderel. | Depuis 25 ans, M. Wener
incite des centaines d’entreprises québécoises à participer à une course-bénéfice afin d’amasser des
fonds pour la recherche sur le cancer. Ces fonds sont distribués à deux institutions phares, soit l’Institut
du cancer de Montréal, affilié à l’Université de Montréal, et le Goodman Cancer Research Centre, affilié

Montréal is renowned for its university research centres, especially cancer research. Academic research
would not be possible without the contribution of donors and philanthropists. In order to make this
happen, donors must be engaged and mobilized. This was achieved in 1989, when Jonathan Wener
founded the Défi Canderel. | For the past 25 years, Jonathan Wener has encouraged Québec businesses
to take part in a benefit race to collect funds for cancer research. These funds are distributed to two leading
institutions, Institut du cancer de Montréal, which is an affiliate of the Université de Montréal, and the
Goodman Cancer Research Centre, a McGill University affiliate. More than 10 million dollars have been
collected through this annual event. | I would like to acknowledge this great Montrealer and his contribution
to the community. Jonathan Wener has received many honours in his life and was also appointed a Member
of the Order of Canada, in 2003. | I salute the hard work and dedication of the organizers and volunteers
of the Défi Canderel, who make this benefit race possible. | I would like to thank the many generous

activities of the Institut du cancer de Montréal (Montreal Cancer Institute). | The Défi Canderel

funds have facilitated the endowment of Excellence Fellowships awarded to the most deserving students

Since its inception, the Centre has fostered a fertile environment for basic research and

Founded in 1947, the Institut du cancer de Montréal (Montreal Cancer
Institute) is a non-profit organization actively supporting the fight against
cancer. Since its inauguration 65 years ago at Notre-Dame Hospital by
pathologist, Louis-Charles Simard, the ICM has since aligned itself with the
University of Montreal. During this time, the ICM has educated hundreds
of inspired young researchers who have made valuable contributions in
the fight against cancer. The ICM’s mandate favours support of crucial
clinical research into cancer and the encouragement of innovation via

L’objectif ultime de cet événement est d’amasser des
fonds pour vaincre le cancer, une maladie qui affecte
un canadien sur trois. La course du Défi rallie, dans
la joie et le plaisir, hommes et femmes d’affaires
de Montréal. Des mises de fonds importantes sont
nécessaires pour la recherche sur le cancer afin qu’un

While the event’s activities are aimed at creating a
fun filled, competitive atmosphere for corporations
and business people in Montreal, our objective is to
deal with cancer, a disease that is now affecting one
in three Canadians. We need major investment in
cancer research so we can one day find a cure and

A chaque année, en mai, plus de 100 équipes de 5 coureurs ou plus participent au Défi sur le terrain
de McGill. Un don minimum est requis pour s’inscrire à l’événement. Afin d’amasser plus de dons,
certaines équipes organisent des collectes de fonds au bureau (par exemple, des encans). Ils
peuvent aussi s’enregistrer sur le site web du Défi et solliciter leurs familles et amis. En 2014,
le thème SUPER-HÉROS est né en l’honneur du combat sans merci contre le cancer.

year in May, over 100 teams of runners participate at the event which starts from McGill. Teams
commit to a standard donation and are made up of 5 or more runners. Corporate teams often
voluntarily help the Défi raise additional funds in several creative ways. Frequently, they sign
up on the Défi website to raise extra money. In 2014, the Superhero theme was born, in honor
of Canderel’s determination to take the fight to cancer.

agent against GPNMB is presently
being tested in clinical trial with
promising results.

The Défi Canderel awarded me a scholarship in 1996 while I was working on my Ph.D. at McGill under the
supervision of Dr. Michel L. Tremblay. This support was my first big break. It offered an important stepping
stone to obtain further provincial and national funding in following years. Since then, I’m proud to have
dedicated my efforts to understanding signalling in cancer cells. As scientists, our careers depend on
constantly obtaining funding, and I am a grateful example of the positive impact Défi Canderel awards
have on career development.

The Défi Canderel studentship I was awarded in 1993 was greatly appreciated. It served as a springboard
to other national awards, which further supported my Ph.D. studies in the Sonenberg lab at McGill. My interest
in cancer research was further enhanced during my training at Queen’s University, where I have built my
own research program dissecting the mechanisms of cancer metastasis. Congratulations on 25 years of

Mme de Santis: Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Twenty-five years ago, when Jonathan Wener
learned that his wife, Susan, had cancer, he decided to get involved and created the Défi
Canderel. Thanks to Jonathan’s charisma, commitment and far-reaching network, the
annual Défi engages the support of the entire Montreal business community. | This year,
more than a thousand people donned superhero costumes and raised $1,150,000. Over
the past 25 years, more than 10 million dollars has been raised for McGill University’s
Goodman Cancer Research Centre and the cancer institute associated with the Université
de Montréal for fundamental research and the development of innovative treatments. | On
behalf of the National Assembly and all of those who have been helped by the Défi
Canderel, I am very honoured to pay tribute to Jonathan Wener and to say, “Thank
you, Jonathan.”
