DÉFINItIoN | défi
Le Dé Canderel est une campagne de nancement pour la recherche sur le cancer. Plusieurs activités
connexes sont au programme toute l’année se terminant par la course dans les rues du centre-ville. Tous
les fonds amassés sont distribués aux centres de recherche et utilisés de façon discrétionnaire. | e Défi
Canderel, encompasses year-round fund raising for cancer research which culminates in the annual run.
All the funds were, and are, offered without restrictions so that scientists can pursue their work unfettered
by bureaucracy.
Les fonds amassés pour le Dé Canderel sont remis au Centre de recherche sur le cancer Goodman de
l’Université McGill et à l’Institut du cancer de Montréal de l’Université de Montréal. En 2014, le Dé a célébré
ses 25 ans et jusqu’à présent a permis de récolter plus de 10 millions de dollars pour la recherche sur le
cancer. | e money benefits the Goodman Cancer Research Centre at McGill University and the Montreal
Cancer Institute at University of Montreal. In 2014, the Défi Canderel celebrated its 25th year, and to date has
raised over 10 million dollars for cancer research.

Depuis mon installation à titre de gouverneur général, j’invite les Canadiennes et Canadiens à imaginer
des moyens pour édier une nation toujours plus avertie et bienveillante. Dans cette optique, je pense
que nous pouvons nous tourner vers des gens comme Jonathan Wener, fondateur du Dé Canderel,
pour puiser une bonne dose d’inspiration. | En 1990, je faisais partie d’un petit groupe d’individus
qui ont pris part à la première édition de cet événement. Depuis, l’initiative de Jonathan Wener a pris
de l’ampleur et permis de recueillir des millions de dollars en vue d’appuyer le Centre de recherche
sur le cancer Rosalind et Morris Goodman et l’Institut du cancer de Montréal. Grâce à sa vision,
aux entreprises qui la soutiennent et aux participants qui donnent de leur cœur et de leur temps,
les Canadiennes et les Canadiens entretiennent l’espoir d’un avenir sans cancer. | À mes yeux,
la philanthropie et le bénévolat constituent les pierres d’assises de toute société dynamique. En ce

Since my installation as governor general of Canada, I have invited Canadians to imagine new ways of
building a smarter, more caring nation. And I think we can turn to people like Jonathan Wener, founder of
the Défi Canderel, for inspiration in that regard. | In 1990, I was one of a small group of individuals who
took part in the first edition of this event. Since then, Jonathan Wener’s initiative has grown exponentially
and has raised millions of dollars in support of the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Research
Centre and the Institut du cancer de Montréal. anks to his vision, to the businesses that support it, and
to the participants who donate their time and efforts, Canadians across the country can envision a future
without cancer. | I believe that philanthropy and volunteerism are the cornerstones of any successful
society. It therefore gives me great pleasure, on this, the Défi Canderel’s 25th anniversary, to congratulate

1989, Jonathan Wener a décidé de rassembler le milieu des aaires de Montréal pour faire avancer
la recherche sur le cancer et améliorer la vie de ceux qui luttent contre cette maladie. Vingt-cinq ans
plus tard, le Dé Canderel a recueilli des millions de dollars pour la recherche sur le cancer au Centre
de recherche sur le cancer Goodman de l’Université McGill et à l’Institut du cancer de Montréal de
l’Université de Montréal. | Je prote de l’occasion pour féliciter M. Wener de son leadership excep-

Canderel. | Following his wife’s cancer diagnosis in 1989, Jonathan Wener decided to bring the Montréal
business community together to advance cancer research and to make a difference in the lives of others
fighting the disease. Twenty-five years later, the Défi Canderel has raised millions of dollars for cancer
research at the Goodman Cancer Research Centre at McGill University and the Institut du cancer de
Montréal at the Université de Montréal. | I would like to take this opportunity to commend Mr. Wener
for his outstanding leadership and philanthropy, and for his unwavering commitment to such an important
cause. Cancer is a devastating illness that touches the lives of thousands of Canadians each year. With
