“Basedonanincreasingamountofmultinational,multicentercohortstudies,randomized
studies,andmeta‐analyses,theconceptofthe"fast‐trackmethodology"hasuniformly
providedamajorenhancementinrecoveryleadingtodecreasedhospitalstayandwithan
apparentreductioninmedicalmorbiditybutunaltered"surgery‐specific"morbidityina
varietyofprocedures.
However,despitebeingbasedonacombinationofevidence‐basedunimodalprinciplesof
care,recentsurveyshavedemonstratedslowadaptationandimplementationofthefast
trackmethodology.
CONCLUSION:Multimodalevidence‐basedcarewithinthefast‐trackmethodology
significantlyenhancespostoperativerecoveryandreducesmorbidity,andshouldtherefore
bemorewidelyadopted.
Furtherimprovementisexpectedbyfutureintegrationofminimalinvasivesurgery,
pharmacologicalstress‐reduction,andeffectivemultimodal,non‐opioïdanalgesia.”
