Dear Parents/Guardians,
Our class will be starting a French unit on clothing this Monday. Clothing is an ever present theme in the world around us, and can help your child to express him or herself with
respect to basic communication. This unit follows our previous units on weather/seasons, parts of the body and colours. This will allow your child to build upon the knowledge that
he/she has previously learned.
In this unit, your child will:
Learn basic vocabulary associated with clothing (by extending upon knowledge acquired in previous units);
Respond to oral text by using simple, but complete sentences;
Use various reading strategies to determine meaning and make sense of unfamiliar words);
Write simple phrases, short sentences and questions using learned vocabulary and simple sentence structures;
Use pronoun subjects (vous, nous, ils, elles) and use the present tense of verbs such as avoir and être, and regular –er verbs;
Agreement in gender and number of regular adjectives with nouns.
Throughout this unit, our class will be engaged in a variety of authentic tasks that mimic real life and allow them to engage in the outside world. For example, when buying clothing
in Quebec, your child will know to describe their desired size, colour, fit, etc.
Here are some suggestions for activities that you can do at home:
Once your child is dressed in the morning, ask him/her what the French word is for certain articles of clothing that he/she are wearing.
Go through an old bag or box of clothes and have them describe the clothing to you utilizing colours and adjectives.
At the end of our unit, the class will be creating a défilé de mode (fashion show). We encourage parents to attend to experience what their child has learned throughout the unit.
We are asking parents to supply any old articles of clothing that they can which can be featured in the fashion show.
Thank you for your support,
A. Howell
