How does aspect map onto nouns.
Some nouns, i.e. nominalizations, can be set apart in that they are morphologically related to
verbs and adjectives, and can be used predicatively. The morphological link between these
nouns and verbs or adjectives raises the issue of the transfer of aspectual properties (from
verbs to nouns).
First, the linguistic tests traditionally used to identify the aspectual properties of verbs are
presented and commented on. Adjectives, which are often classified as stative predicates in
French, are less extensively studied from an aspectual point of view. Yet it is possible to
distinguish adjectives that may denote behaviours, and are therefore more tightly connected
with dynamicity than with stativity.
The aspectual properties of nouns are then examined. The selectional restrictions that some
prepositions impose on their nominal complements enable us to reveal the aspectual
properties of nouns, and to compare them to those of the predicates (verbs or adjectives) they
are derived from. It can be observed that, though aspectual inheritance is frequent there may
be discrepancies between the verbal and the nominal domains. For instance, atelicity is not
systematically inherited by nouns. As to deadjectival nominalizations, it is striking that the
notion of dynamicity is still marked in the semantics of nouns morphologically related to
behaviour adjectives.
