Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in the Union of South Africa.
He is known to be a politician at the helm of the struggle against apartheid, which
leads him first to the peaceful struggle against oppression.
Then following the massacre of black rights protesters in Sharpeville in 1960,
when the ANC or African National Congress to which Nelson Mandela belongs is
banned, the clandestine struggle and the taking of arms.
Sentenced in 1964 to life imprisonment, he will remain incarcerated 27 years ...
but still popular, will be elected April 27, 1994 to the presidency of his country a
few years after his release from prison.
He became the first black president of South Africa, for a single presidential term,
until 1999. His whole life was articulated around the fight against racial
segregation.
For this, he will obtain the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Towards the end of his life,
he no longer participates in politics but turns to charities. Nelson Mandela died on
December 5, 2013, at age 95.
