The abundance of cladocerans recorded in plankton samples from the littoral regions of two enviroments (Baía River and Guaraná lake), the Upper Paraná River floodplain and some limnological variables important in controlling their abundance were investigated at three sites in the lake and two in the river, from March/93 to January/94. Abundance was highest in the lake, chiefly during high water. Bosminidae dominated in both environments and hydrological periods (high and low water). Chydoridae were more important in the lake, and Sididae in the river. A higher number of Pearson's correlations significative (p < 0.03) between the densities of the ten most important species and the limnological variables was observed in the river. The progradation of the shores of the Gallon Bay (Martinique) has been measured based on diachronic mapping analysis. The sedimentary volume which accumulates along the coast and in the bay (under the water surface) is unknown. Erodibility has been surveyed on a square meter scale and extrapolated to the watersheds. The results show that most sediments originate from the farmed surfaces, they are then entrained by the runoff and the Gallon river and deposited along the coast, where the bathymetry and currentology of the bay facilitate sediment retention. This paper examines existing measures taken to protect the coastal zones of the Mediterranean Sea and assesses their success. A summary of the main pressures facing these zones is given, followed by an analysis of the legislation covering coastal zone development in ten countries: Algeria, Croatia, Egypt, France, Israel, Italy, Malta, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey. We find that not all of these states have legislation specifically covering coastal zones, but there is concern in all areas that the legislation is not working, We also look at the costs and benefits of controlling coastal development. S. de; Veloso,Valéria G. A survey was made of the species of Brachyura collected by "Project Algas", along the entire coast of the state of Paraíba, Brazil. This project was one of the most complete ever carried out off the coast of this state. At the 93 stations sampled by the vessel "Pesquisador IV", 60 species, in 41 genera and 15 families were collected. For each species, the geographical distribution, habitat and list of stations where it occurred are given. Also provided are a map showing the locations of all the project stations and a table with the oceanographic data of each station and the species occurring at each station.
