Excellence in Health Leadership L’excellence en leadership dans le secteur de la santé Robert Wood Johnson Awards Sandra Racco-Cella, CHE University of Toronto Sandra Cella is passionate about community healthcare and has over 17 years of increasingly senior leadership roles within the home and community care sector. As Vice President, Clinical Operations, Central CCAC, she has inspired and led high-performing professionals in the delivery of quality services and provided strategic advice and support to the executive team. A visionary leader, her ultimate goal is to achieve sustainable results by focusing on quality, innovation, and value, while improving the patient experience. A lifelong learner, Sandra is a Registered Nurse, is certified as Project Management Professional, a graduate of Advanced Health Leadership Program at the Rotman School of Management, and has completed Advanced Management Courses from the Schulich Business School. For the Master of Science in Health Administration, Sandra completed her practicum experience at Health Quality Ontario, where she wrote a “Guide to Improving the Resident Relations Process for Long-Term Care”. Olga Sawatzky University of British Columbia Olga Sawatzky completed her Bachelor degree in Administrative Studies at York University and Bachelor of Nursing at University of Toronto. Olga has immigrated to Canada from Latvia in 1998, and spent seven years with Canadian Forces Medical Reserves, while completing her education. Olga and her family moved to Kelowna in 2007, where she currently works as a Patient Care Coordinator at Kelowna General Hospital Operating Room. Over the past eight years, Olga has concentrated her efforts on the operational improvement and team dynamics in Perioperative Nursing practice. The interest in this field has led her to pursue the MHA at the University of British Columbia. Olga is very excited to be bringing the knowledge gained throughout the program back to her practice settings, and she is looking forward to helping build a healthy workplace environment, and a happy workforce at Kelowna General Hospital. Chang-Hung Yuan University of Montreal Chan practiced physical therapy since his graduation in 2007 from the University of Montreal. He worked at the Montreal Heart Institute from 2007 to 2008 and continued his practice at Kinatex Sports Physio. Throughout his work as a clinician, Chang was able to develop scientific knowledge and specific manual skills. Furthermore, he collaborated with different healthcare stakeholders and professionals, which contributed to the discovery of his leadership abilities. As a result, he started his Master degree in healthcare management at the University of Montreal School of Public Health and will graduate this year. He strongly believes that the Canadian public health system could benefit from more innovative management, especially in a context where financing, and aging populations are causing strain on public finances. He thinks efficient communication, collaboration, conciliation, and compromise among individuals would translate to concrete results. À titre de vice-présidente des Opérations cliniques au Centre d’accès aux soins communautaires du Centre (CASC du Centre), elle a inspiré et dirigé une équipe de professionnels hautement performants assurant la prestation de services de qualité et a fourni des conseils stratégiques et un soutien à l’équipe de direction. Son but ultime est de parvenir à des résultats durables en se concentrant sur la qualité, l’innovation et la valeur, tout en améliorant l’expérience du patient. Sandra est une infirmière autorisée, une professionnelle certifiée en gestion de projet, une diplômée du programme de leadership avancé en santé de l’École de gestion Rotman et a suivi des cours en gestion avancée à l’École de gestion Schulich. Pour sa maîtrise ès sciences en administration de la santé, Sandra a a rédigé un guide sur l’amélioration du processus de relations avec les résidents d’établissements de soins de longue durée. Olga Sawatzky Université de la Colombie-Britannique Olga Sawatzky a terminé son baccalauréat en études administratives à l’Université York et un baccalauréat en soins infirmiers à l’Université de Toronto. Olga, qui est originaire de la Lettonie, est arrivée au Canada en 1998 et a passé sept ans dans la force de réserve médicale des forces canadiennes pendant qu’elle terminait ses études. En 2007, Olga et sa famille ont déménagé à Kelowna où elle travaille actuellement en tant que coordonnatrice des soins aux patients dans le bloc opératoire de l’Hôpital Général de Kelowna. Au cours des huit dernières années, Olga a concentré ses efforts sur l’amélioration des opérations et la dynamique de l’équipe chargée des soins infirmiers périopératoires. Son intérêt pour ce domaine l’a amenée à entamer sa maîtrise en administration de la santé à l’Université de la ColombieBritannique. Olga a très hâte d’appliquer dans son milieu de travail les connaissances acquises tout au long du programme et elle compte aider à créer un environnement de travail sain et un effectif heureux à l’Hôpital Général de Kelowna. Chang a collaboré avec différents intervenants et professionnels en soins de santé, ce qui a contribué à lui faire découvrir ses capacités de leadership. Il s’est donc inscrit à la maîtrise en administration des services de santé à l’École de santé publique de l’Université de Montréal, programme qu’il terminera cette année. Il croit fermement que le système de santé publique du Canada pourrait bénéficier d’une gestion plus innovatrice, surtout dans le contexte actuel où le financement et le vieillissement de la population exercent des pressions sur les finances publiques. Il croit que la communication, la collaboration, la conciliation et les compromis entre individus produiraient des résultats concrets. Excellence in Health Leadership L’excellence en leadership dans le secteur de la santé Robert Wood Johnson Awards Anna Brown University of Alberta Anna recently completed her Masters of Public Health in Health Policy Management at the University of Alberta’s School of Public Health. She earned a Bachelor of Nursing from Mount Royal University in 2011. Anna has practiced in emergency and urgent care settings, where she developed a passion for developing health policy to improve health of populations, particularly in the area of health system funding. Currently, Anna works as a Program Consultant for Alberta Health and is completing a Project Management Internship with the Institute of Public Administration of Canada, Edmonton Regional Group, and the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research at the University of Alberta. Anna is looking forward to bringing her nursing and policy backgrounds together to improve health of Albertans and Canadians. Katie Hollis Ottawa University Prior to starting the Masters in Health Administration program at the University of Ottawa, Katie was a clinical pharmacist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario where she worked in paediatric haematology & oncology. However, her desire to gain further understanding into the complexity of healthcare delivery was fuelled by the belief that the responsibility to provide high quality, patient centered care extends beyond that of the healthcare professional. Since completing the Masters program, Katie now works at the Queensway Carleton Hospital as the Pharmacy Manager of Clinical and Professional Practice and is responsible for ensuring safe, effective medication management practices for each patient throughout the organization. She is also actively involved with the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists occupying various roles on committees and councils at both the provincial and national levels. Recently, Katie joined the MHA Alumni Association’s Board as a member-at-large where she looks forward to giving back to the community that has inspired her throughout her studies and continues to inspire her each and every day. Nico Miraftab Dalhousie University Nico Miraftab, a native of Vancouver BC, is a recent graduate of the Master of Health Administration (MHA) program at Dalhousie University. Nico obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Health Science with a Minor in Psychology from Simon Fraser University, and decided to pursue the MHA at Dalhousie for its full-time education and exciting residency opportunity.Nico proved his potential in his first year through the receipt for the Glen Moore Memorial Award for effective leadership, congeniality, and likelihood to make a noteworthy contribution to the field of health administration, and further developed his leadership abilities in his second year by taking a Teaching Assistant position and being elected as CCHL Representative to the Association of Health Administration Students (AHAS). Passionate about advancing the Canadian healthcare system through practical and tangible improvements, Nico intends on being a catalyst for change early in his career through gaining expertise in quality improvement, project and change management. Elle a obtenu un baccalauréat en soins infirmiers de l’Université Mount Royal en 2011. Anna a exercé sa profession dans des milieux de soins urgents où elle s’est découvert une passion pour l’élaboration de politiques de santé, notamment dans le domaine du financement des systèmes de santé, dans le but d’améliorer la santé des populations. À l’heure actuelle, Anna travaille en tant que consultante en matière de programmes pour Alberta Health et termine un stage en gestion de projet au Groupe régional d’Edmonton de l’Institut d’administration publique du Canada et à la Faculté des études supérieures et de la recherche à l’Université de l’Alberta. Anna a hâte de combiner sa formation et son expérience en soins infirmiers et en politiques pour améliorer la santé des Albertains et des Canadiens. Katie Hollis Université d’Ottawa Avant d’entreprendre le programme de maîtrise en gestion des services de santé (M.G.S.S.) à l’Université d’Ottawa, Katie était pharmacienne clinicienne au Centre hospitalier pour enfants de l’Est de l’Ontario où elle travaillait en hématologie et en oncologie pédiatrique. Son désir de mieux comprendre la complexité de la prestation de soins de santé a été alimenté par la conviction que la responsabilité à l’égard de la fourniture de soins de grande qualité centrés sur le patient ne relève pas seulement des professionnels des soins de santé. Depuis qu’elle a terminé le programme de maîtrise, Katie travaille à l’Hôpital Queensway Carleton en tant que gestionnaire de pharmacie, Pratique clinique et professionnelle, et est chargée d’assurer le recours à des pratiques de gestion sûres et efficaces des médicaments pour chaque patient dans l’organisation. Elle est également active dans l’Association canadienne des pharmaciens d’hôpitaux où elle joue divers rôles au sein de comités et de conseils aux niveaux provincial et national. Récemment, Katie s’est jointe au Conseil d’administration de l’Association des anciens du M.G.S.S. à titre de membre hors cadre. Nico Miraftab Université Dalhousie Nico Miraftab, natif de Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique, est un diplômé récent du programme de maîtrise en gestion des services de santé (M.G.S.S.) de l’Université Dalhousie. Nico a obtenu un baccalauréat en sciences de la santé avec mineure en psychologie de l’Université Simon Fraser. Il a démontré son potentiel dès sa première année en recevant le Prix commémoratif Glen Moore pour le leadership efficace et il a poursuivi le perfectionnement de ses capacités de leadership pendant la deuxième année en acceptant un poste d’aideenseignant et en se faisant élire en tant que représentant du CCLS à l’Association of Health Administration Students (AHAS). Nico, qui tient passionnément à faire avancer le système de santé canadien au moyen d’améliorations pratiques et tangibles, a l’intention d’être un catalyseur du changement tôt dans sa carrière en acquérant une expertise en amélioration de la qualité et en gestion de projet et de changement.
