LeProgrammeontariendedépistageducancerdusein(PODCS)aconstatéquelesfemmesde50à
54ansreprésententleplusgrandnombredefemmesadmissiblesàunexamendedépistagequin'ont
pasencorepasséunemammographie.
«Ledépistageprécoceducancerduseinparmammographiesignifiequ'ilyaunemeilleurechancede
traiterlecanceravecsuccès,expliquelaDreLindaRabeneck,Vice‐présidente,Préventionetluttecontre
lecancerdeActionCancerOntario.En2015,environ9800femmesdel'Ontarioontreçuundiagnostic
decancerduseinetenviron1900sontdécédéesdecettemaladie.C'estpourquoinousinvitonsles
femmesadmissiblesàcommencerledépistageplustôtqueplustard».
Êtes‐vousadmissibleàunemammographie?Voicipourquoilemessage«Prenezsimplementrendez‐
vous»s'adresseàvousaujourd'hui:
1. Lecancerduseinestlaformedecancerlapluscourantechezlesfemmesdel'Ontario,etune
femmesurhuitdevraitrecevoirundiagnosticdelamaladieaucoursdesavie.
2. Ilfautenmoyennecinqminutespourprendrerendez‐vouspourunemammographie.
3. Lecancerduseinprésentelestauxdesurvieparmilesplusélevésparrapportauxautres
cancers.
4. Lesmammographiesconstituentunedesméthodeslesplusefficacesetlesplusfiablespour
décelerlecancerduseindefaçonprécoce.
5. LePODCSoffred'importantsavantagesauxfemmes,notammentlesuivirapideetappropriédes

Unemammographieestuneradiographieduseinquiestutiliséepourledépistage.Lesmammographies
sontréaliséespardestechnologistesenradiationsmédicalesautorisés.Uneplaquedeplastiqueest
abaisséelentementpourcomprimerleseinetestmaintenueenplacependantquelquessecondes.La
clientepeutressentirunecertainepressionsurlesein,maiscettepressionn'endommagepasletissu

mammaire.Lesmammographiessontréaliséessansfraispourlesfemmesdel'Ontarioquisont
admissiblesauxexamensdedépistage.
LesgroupessuivantsdefemmessontadmissiblesàunemammographieparlebiaisduPODCS:
 Lesfemmesde50à74ansquisontexposéesàunrisquemoyendecancerdusein.Lesfemmes
sontconsidéréesadmissiblespourleProgrammepourrisquemoyensiellesn'ontaucunsigne
desymptômesaigusdecancerdusein,n'ontpasd'antécédentspersonnelsdecancerdusein,
n'ontpasd'implantsmammairesetn'ontpaspasséunemammographieaucoursdes
11derniersmois.Ilestrecommandéquelesfemmesadmissiblesdecegrouped'âgepassentun
examendedépistagetouslesdeuxans.
 Lesfemmesde30à69ansquisontreconnuescommeétantexposéesàunrisqueélevéde
cancerdusein.Àcompterde30ans,lesfemmesquipeuventêtreexposéesàunrisqueélevéde
cancerduseinpeuventêtreadresséesparleurfournisseurdesoinsdesantéauProgrammede
dépistagepourrisqueélevéduPODCSenfonctiondeleursantécédentsfamiliauxoumédicaux.
Lesfemmesadmissiblessontinvitéesàprendrerendez‐vousentouttempspourunemammographieen

Fivereasonswhyyoushouldgetscreenedforearlysignsofbreastcancer
Bookingamammogramtakesjustfiveminutes
OctoberisBreastCancerAwarenessMonthandtheEasternOntarioHealthUnit(EOHU),inpartnership
withCancerCareOntario,isinvitingeligiblewomento“JustBookIt”byschedulingtheirmammogram
appointments.
TheOntarioBreastScreeningProgram(OBSP)foundthatwomenaged50to54makeupthelargest
numberofscreen‐eligiblewomenwhohavenotyethadamammogram.
“Earlydetectionofbreastcancerthroughmammogramscreeningsmeansthere’sabetterchanceof
treatingitsuccessfully,”saidDr.LindaRabeneck,Vice‐President,PreventionandCancerControlat
CancerCareOntario.“In2015,anestimated9800Ontariowomenwerediagnosedwithbreastcancer
andapproximately1900womendiedofthedisease.That’swhyweareinvitingeligiblewomentostart
screeningsoonerratherthanlater.”
Areyoueligibleforamammogram?Here’swhyyoushould“JustBookIt”today:
1. BreastcanceristhemostcommoncancerinOntariowomenwithoneineightwomenexpected
tobediagnosedwiththediseaseintheirlifetime.
2. Theaveragemammogramscreeningtakesfiveminutestobook.
3. Breastcancerhasoneofthehighestsurvivalrateswhencomparedtoothercancers.
4. Mammogramsarestilloneofthebestandmostreliablewaystodetectbreastcancerearlyon.
5. TheOBSPoffersimportantbenefitsforwomen,includingappropriateandtimelyfollow‐upof
abnormalfindingsandongoingqualitymonitoringandmanagement.
“Breastcanceroccursprimarilyinwomen50to74yearsofage,sonowisthetimeforwomenonthe
youngerendofthisagerange,from50to54,tonotonlystartthinkingaboutscreeningforbreast
cancer,buttostartbookingtheirregularmammograms,”saysLysanneTrudeau,ProgramManager,
EarlyDetectionofCancerattheEOHU.
AmammogramisanX‐rayofthebreastthatisusedforscreening.Amammogramisadministeredbya
registeredmedicalradiationtechnologist,andinvolvesaplasticplatethatisslowlypresseddownto
flattenthebreastandholditinplaceforafewseconds.Thepatientwillfeelsomepressureonthe
breast,butthispressurewillnotharmbreasttissue.MammogramsarefreeofchargetoOntariowomen
whoareeligibletobescreened.
ThefollowinggroupsofwomenareeligibleforamammogramthroughtheOBSP:

 Womenaged50to74yearswhoareataverageriskforbreastcancer.Womenareconsidered
eligiblefortheaverageriskprogramiftheyshownoacutebreastcancersymptoms,haveno
personalhistoryofbreastcancer,andhavenocurrentbreastimplants.Itisrecommendedthat
mosteligiblewomengetscreenedeverytwoyears.
 Womenaged30to69yearswhoareidentifiedasbeingathighriskforbreastcancer.Startingat
age30,womenwhomaybeathighriskforbreastcancercanbereferredbytheirhealthcare
providertotheOBSPHighRiskScreeningProgrambasedontheirfamilyormedicalhistory.
Eligiblewomenareencouragedtobookamammogramatanytimebycalling1800668‐9304.No
