Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis and bovine viral diarrhoea: repercussions for animal 
health and international trade 
CONSIDERING THAT 
The diseases caused by infectious bovine rhinotracheitis and bovine viral diarrhoea viruses in 
cattle have economic repercussions, are of epidemiological significance and are important in 
international trade, 
Bovine viral diarrhoea is complicated by the emergence of a new virus genotype and testing for 
bovine viral diarrhoea virus must now ensure detection of two genotypes, 
Some strains of bovine viral diarrhoea virus are particularly virulent but the mechanisms of 
virulence are poorly understood, 
Questions remain about the efficacy of existing vaccines for these diseases and how vaccines may 
be improved,  
Some countries have initiated national control and eradication programmes for infectious bovine 
rhinotracheitis and bovine viral diarrhoea, 
THE OIE REGIONAL COMMISSION FOR THE AMERICAS 
RECOMMENDS THAT 
1.  Research be continued in order to better understand the processes by which infectious 
bovine rhinotracheitis and bovine viral diarrhoea virus cause diseases, for the improvement 
of control measures and validation of test methods. 
2.  OIE Reference Laboratories be established for bovine viral diarrhoea. 
3.  A chapter on bovine viral diarrhoea be included in the
 International Animal Health Code
. 
4.  The countries of the Americas consider the implementation of national programmes for the 
prevention, control and eradication of both diseases.
