Student log on – we would not be collecting any information on students, this would solely be to allow them to keep scores and collect bonuses every time they return to the site thereby encouraging them to return 2. High ranking scores – on the home page we could have a section of high ranking scores, either by individual visitor or by country. This would add a competitive feel to the website and encourage visitors to return. 3. A thermal map of Europe showing how many people are online at that particular time point 4. FASCINATING FACTS - a bank of 104 fascinating facts that would change on a weekly basis allowing 2 years worth of facts Create your own avatar Students could create their own avatar to guide them through the various sections of the website, this avatar could potentially remind them of areas they have yet to visit, give them updates on how they can earn more bonuses and tell them when they have got answers wrong in the quiz or revision sections. Downloads SEM and EM photographs of various microbes and all pack artwork available for download Revision guide a set of interactive pages on each of the e-Bug topics for students. Students would be given the information in text and this would be followed up by an interactive activity Hall of Fame Quiz A photograph or cartoon drawing hall of fame of people in history who have made a positive contribution to science with background information and some interesting facts to make them more human a large bank of questions (perhaps 200) meaning that every time a student visits the website they get asked a different 20 questions. When they get a question wrong they would be given correct answer and an explanation by their avatar. The more they get right the higher their bonus bank would become. Games this is where you would connect to the e-Bug junior and senior games and any other games that may be developed in the future Disease fact files a set of fact cards on infectious diseases relevant to students Home science A set of activities that students could do at home to teach science e.g. Hand hygiene pepper activity Campaigns Facilities to provide information on European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) or Global hand washing day (GHD). Students would be given the information in text and this would be followed up by an interactive activity Introduction to Microbes • Microbes are very small living organisms, they are so small we need a microscope to see them • There are three different types of microbes • •Viruses •Bacteria •Fungi They come in many different shapes and sizes Introduction to Microbes • Encourages learning from home • Place where students can go to find out more Viruses Viruses are the smallest of the microbes and can even live inside other microbes! Some viruses make us sick. Diseases like CHICKENPOX and the FLU are caused by viruses. Viruses can spread from one person to another but it depends on the type of virus. This virus is called Influenza (in-flu-en-za) and causes the flu • Helps with homework • Incentive for teachers to recommend the site to students • Each set of revision pages would be followed by an interactive online activity 3. Revision Guides Student Feedback In General • Very good idea • The text should be simple but certain words should be highlighted and you can click on these to find more information • The activities should be after the revision sections so that you do something AFTER you have learned about it • The activities should ALSO be in the games sections for students who have already done the revision sections and just want to play games In your groups, can you think on any simple web activities to reinforce these learning outcomes 1. Disease Fact Files Disease fact files a set of fact cards on infectious diseases relevant to students Lymphocryptovirus Influenza A The Epstein-Barr virus is a type of Lymphocryptovirus causing an illness known as the Kissing Disease or Glandular fever. Patients suffer from sore throats, swollen lymph glands, and extreme tiredness. The flu is an infection caused by Transmission requires close contact such as kissing or sharing drinks.Orthomyxoviridae. Every year 5 – Varicellovirus 40% of the population get the flu but most people recover completely in a couple of weeks. In 1918, before there were any vaccines for the flu, twenty million people were killed! Chickenpox is caused by the Varicella-Zoster virus. It is highly contagious although rarely serious and is spread through direct contact (or coughing and sneezing).
