Phrase Exclamative :
Les phrases exclamatives servent à exprimer des émotions telles que la surprise,
l'admiration, le regret...
Elles sont la plupart du temps terminées par un point d'exclamation et ont toujours une
intonation descendante.
L'exclamation peut porter sur un adjectif, un adverbe, un nom ou groupe nominal, un
verbe ou groupe verbal.
1. L'exclamation porte sur un nom ou groupe nominal
L'exclamation portant sur un nom ou un groupe nominal peut être introduite par l'un des
deux mots exclamatifs suivants : what et such.
a. "What"
What peut porter sur un nom comme sur un groupe nominal.
Au singulier, avec un nom dénombrable, on a :
What + déterminant + adjectif + nom dénombrable.
Ex. : What a nice car you have! Quelle jolie voiture vous avez !
Au singulier, avec un nom indénombrable, on a :
What + ø + adjectif + nom indénombrable.
Ex. : What awful tea! Quel horrible thé !
Au pluriel, avec un nom dénombrable, on a :
What + ø + adjectif + nom dénombrable pluriel.
Ex. : What beautiful photos! Quelles jolies photos !
Attention !
– Il y a des exceptions : certaines expressions se construisent en effet avec un nom
indénombrable précédé d'un déterminant.
Ex. : What a pity! What a shame! Quel dommage ! Quelle honte !
Quel dommage !
– Un groupe nominal peut comporter un adjectif.
Ex. : What a good idea! What interesting books! Quelle bonne idée ! Quels livres intéressants
!
b. "Such"
Such porte sur un groupe nominal.
Singulier
She's such an intelligent girl !
C'est une fille tellement intelligente !
Pluriel
They're such nice boys !
Ce sont de si gentils garçons !
2. L'exclamation porte sur un adjectif ou un adverbe

L'exclamation portant sur un adjectif ou un adverbe peut être introduite par l'un des deux
mots exclamatifs suivants : how et so.
a. "How"
Ex. : How nice of you! Comme c'est gentil de ta part !
b. "So"
Ex. : This baby is so sweet! Ce bébé est tellement mignon !
Attention !
How et what ne sont pas ici des mots interrogatifs. Il n'y a donc pas d'inversion du sujet et
de l'éventuel auxiliaire.
3. L'exclamation porte sur un verbe ou groupe verbal
Quand l'exclamation porte sur un verbe ou un groupe verbal, on a le choix entre deux
constructions : how et so much.
a. "How"
L'exclamatif how est suivi du groupe verbal.
Ex. : How they laughed! Comme ils ont ri !
b. "So much"
Contrairement à how, so much se fait précéder du verbe sur lequel il porte.
Ex. : We ran so much! Nous avons tellement couru !
