A one dimensional coupled air-sea model for diagnostic studies during Toga Coare

A process-oriented diagnostic model has been developed, which couples an atmospheric column model to an upper ocean model.
In vertical structure and representation of physical processes, the atmospheric model resembles a single horizontal grid point of a
general circulation model. It includes vertical transports by convection and turbulent mixing, radiative transfert with interactive
clouds, and a complete hydrologic cycle. The ocean model is a simple mixed layer, synchronously coupled to the atmosphere
through a surface energy budget computation. Time-dependent observational analyses of horizontal atmospheric transports of
momentum, heat and moisture are used to force the coupled model. The model then produces such fields as temperature,

An important issue in understanding the low frequency evolution of the atmospheric circulation and the ocean-atmosphere system
is the role of transients during individual events. We examine this question from an observational point-of-view for two different
time scales and speculate on the importance of transients from these two different perspectives. Our analysis period covers
September 1981 - April 1982 which includes the development phase of the 1982-83 El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) as well
as six Madden-Julian (30-60 day) Oscillations (MJO). The latter include a strong event during december 1981 that is studied in

Diagnostic studies of Pacific surface winds

Analyses are performed using surface winds derived from the FSU Pacific pseudo-stress fields. Vorticity budget calculations
reveal the relative contributions of various terms, and allow simplification of the full momentum equations. Based on the
simplified equations, a procedure is developed for estimating surface pressure, and then adjusting the winds. Finally, the winds
and pressure are used to infer boundary layer and upper level forcing, within the context of particular model formulations. The
results reveal deficiencies in these models, and suggest a convective heating structure different from what is often assumed.

Hydrodynamique des lagons d'atoll et d'île haute en Polynésie française

Cette étude a pour objet la compréhension et la quantification de la circulation et des échanges d'eau entre lagon et océan, dans les
configurations d'atoll (Tikehau) et d'île haute (Moorea) en Polynésie Française. Après investigation de l'environnement physique
(bathymétrique, atmosphérique et océanique), et mesure directe des débits d'échange, on a pu calculer les temps de résidence de
l'eau dans les lagons au cours de l'année. Une méthode indirecte (modèle de passe) basée sur l'observation du niveau du lagon
d'atoll a été testée et utilisée sur une longue série de mesures pour calculer les débits d'échange instantanés et leurs moyennes

The ocean and atmosphere are driven by fluxes of momentum, heat, and water mas. The importance of fluxes of momentum and
heat is well recognized by both meteorologists and oceanographers. The hydrological cycle is, however, only given considerable

Les préoccupartions des physiciens de l'atmosphère et des climatologues rejoignent celles des hydrologues continentaux d'une part
parce que le cycle de l'eau joue un rôle fondamental dans les bilans d'énergie de l'atmosphère elle-même, en particulier dans les
tropiques, d'autre part en raison de la nécessité de comprendre et de représenter convenablement les échanges à la surface.
Cependant les échelles abordées sont généralement différentes. Une rencontre plus étroite des deux domaines est souhaitable, au
prix d'une adaptation des objectifs de chacun : les modèles météorologiques mésoéchelle, les radars météorologiques... peuvent
atteindre des échelles applicables à l'hydrologie ; tandis que les bilans hydrologiques intégrés à plus grande échelle,...

This paper is broadly concerned with the application of wind profiling Doppler radar technology to tropical atmospheric research.
Examples of the use of wind profilers in the tropics are drawn from the Aeronomy Laboratory's wind profiler located on Pohnpei
(7°N, 158°E) and Christmas Island (2°N, 175°W). The Pohnpei wind profiler was constructed in 1984 and has been used
exclusively to observe vertical motions. The Christmas Island wind profiler has observed horizontal and vertical velocities
routinely since 1986. These two profilers form part of a planned trans-Pacific network of wind-profiling radars that will
