The Use of Etre
Etre is used as a helping verb in the
past for specific verbs
These verbs CAN NOT use avoir as a
helping verb… they must use être
(conjugated in the present)
Subject + helping verb (être) + past
participle*
The main formation stays the same
only you are now using être instead of
avoir as the helping verb

Verbs that go with Etre
The following verbs go with être in the
passe compose
Aller partir
Arriver passer
Descendre rester
Entrer retourner
Rentrer sortir
Monter tomber
Mourir * venir*
Naitre* devenir* (revenir)

IRREGULAR PAST
PARTICIPLES
The following five verbs have irregular
past participles
Mourir = mort
Naitre = né
Venir = venu
Devenir = devenu
All the other verbs that go with etre
follow the rules for past participles

Etre conjugated : je suis
Past participle: Je suis parti (I left)
The unique component with être is that the
past participles must agree with the subject
Elle est partie (she left)
Elles sont parties (they left)
Nous sommes partis (we (guys) left)
