Introduction to Strength of Materials
1
CHAPTER I
Introduction
2
Studies the resistance and deformation of solids (beams,
buildings, bridges, mechanical parts).
Objective: ensure safe and efficient design of structures
under applied loads.
Approach:
Analyze external actions internal forces and stresses
Use material properties to predict deformation and rupture
Provides engineers with a fundamental tool for design, before
moving to advanced methods such as FEM.
Objectives
3
Two main types of analysis:*
Verification and Analysis : Check if an existing structure
can safely resist loads
Design and Sizing : Design new structures to resist loads
with safety margins
Applications: existing structures (bridges, dams, large
buildings) and new projects (buildings, dams, highways,
power plants)
How to represent the structure schematically?
What are the acting forces and how are they
transmitted?
Does the structure resist safely?
How does it deform under load?
Which parts are most solicited?
The Forth Bridge - UK
Design and precise of a mechanical part or a civil engineering structure so that it
can withstand permanent and accidental external actions throughout its entire
service life
