Unit 9: Health and the Body (S5)
Icebreaker: Students are encouraged to discuss common health problems.
Phase 1: Reading Comprehension
Breaking Free from Unhealthy Eating Habits
Unhealthy eating habits have become a widespread concern in modern society, largely due
to the availability of processed and fast foods. Many people rely on convenience meals that are
high in sugar, salt, and calories, which can lead to serious health issues over time. These foods
are often marketed as quick solutions for busy lifestyles, but they lack the essential nutrients
needed for proper growth, energy, and overall well-being.
One common unhealthy habit is skipping meals, particularly breakfast. When individuals
miss meals, they often compensate later by overeating or choosing calorie-dense snacks. This
irregular eating pattern disrupts metabolism and can contribute to weight gain. Additionally,
consuming sugary drinks instead of water is another harmful practice. Sodas provide empty
calories and increase the risk of diabetes, obesity, and dental problems.
Another issue is the excessive consumption of fast food. Burgers, fries, and fried chicken
may be tasty and affordable, but they are loaded with calories and sodium. Regular intake of
such meals can raise cholesterol levels and blood pressure, leading to cardiovascular diseases.
Moreover, eating late at night or snacking while watching television encourages overeating
and poor digestion, further harming the body.
To combat these habits, individuals must adopt healthier routines such as eating balanced
meals, drinking plenty of water, and limiting processed foods. Developing healthy eating
practices and preparing meals at home can significantly improve health outcomes. By making
small but consistent changes, people can break free from unhealthy eating patterns and build a
foundation for long-term wellness.
