Introduction
Background Information.
Scoliosis
A medical condition where a person’s spine has a sideways curve.
1. Prevalence: up to 5.2%.
2. Consequences: severe developmental
problems, complications from injury to the
heart and lungs, etc.
3. Treatment: decisions are currently made by
assessing the degree of spinal deformations.
Most common type of spinal
deformity that occurs in
children at the onset of puberty
(Weinstein et al., 2008).

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis
Scoliotic spine (left) and normal spine (right).
The Cobb Angle
The current golden standard for assessing spinal deformities.
1. Definition: the greatest angle at a particular
region of the vertebral column, when measured
from the superior endplate of a superior
vertebra to the inferior endplate of an inferior
vertebra.
2. Assessment: the Cobb Angles are preferably
measured while standing, and a person whose
Cobb Angle exceeds 10° will be diagnosed
scoliotic.
Measure the extent of lateral and
sagittal curvature of the spine based
on anterior-posterior (AP) and lateral
(LAT) X-ray images.

RGB-D Images
A combination of RGB images and the corresponding depth images.
A sample RGB image. Its depth image (visualized).
Depth Images and Microsoft AKDK
A depth image is an image channel in which each pixel relates to a distance between the image plane and the
corresponding object in the RGB image, which can be captured by Microsoft Azure Kinect DK.
