ButIalsowantedtogetmyideasoutintotheworldandhopefullymakeadent
inthedatingadviceindustrysince,atthetime,IfeltthatwhatIhadtosaywas
quitedifferentfromthevastmajorityoftoxic“PickUp”advicethatwasbeing
taughttomen.
ThebookcameoutonJuly5th,2011.Itwasself-publishedthroughAmazonand
my own website. That first month it only sold a few hundred copies – mostly
blogreadersandformerclientsofmine.Manyofthemreportedtomemanyof
themistakesandhelpedmeedititovertheproceedingweeksandafewsmall
updateswerereleasedsoonafter.Bythefallofthatyear,Ifeltgoodthatitwas
outthereandpeoplelikeditandsoonmovedontootherprojects.
Butasthemonthsrolledon,thebookbegantotakeonalifeofitsown.Withno
marketing, no publicity, no promotion, and a shitty cover I made myself in
Photoshop,thebook’ssalesgrewexponentiallyeachmonth.Likeamindvirus,
infecting people’s brains so that they could move on and infect others, men
beganrecommendingittotheirfriends,andthentheirfriendsrecommendeditto
theirfriends,andsoontheirfriends’friendswerebuyingitfortheirbrothersand
cousins and even newly divorced fathers and uncles. It was soon being
recommendedonwebsitesandforumssomuchthatIbegantogetemailsasking
metostopspamming.ButIwasn’tspamming.Iwasn’tdoinganything.Itwas
simplythereaders.
Byearly2012,tomypleasantsurprise,Iwasearningenoughtomakealivingas
an author. So I quit coaching and focused solely on my writing. That same
summerIalsogavethebookitsfirstrealrevision.Ihiredadesignertocreatea
real cover. I chopped about 50 of the more pedantic and excessive pages. I
simplifiedsomeofthetermsandtheoriesandtriedtomakethemmorereader-
friendly.WhatIconsiderthefirst‘professional’versionofModelswasreleased
inAugustof2012.
