Methodology Facility Assessment
Health facilities were eligible if they
fulfilled the following characteristics:
>1000 deliveries per year,
Availability of gynecology ward, surgical
capability to provide emergency obstetrical care
(including removal of retained products and, abortion
provision and/or post-abortion care)
Sub-Saharan Africa: 210 facilities
Latin America and Caribbean: 70 facilities

Methodology Individual Assessment
Inclusion: Women’s presenting to the facility with
signs and symptoms from abortion-related
complications or early pregnancy loss (including
ectopic and molar pregnancies) or death at
discharge
Exclusion: Women with a diagnosis of threatened
abortion, defined as vaginal bleeding with a closed
cervix were excluded.
Data on women’s characteristics including
socio-demographics, obstetric history, clinical
information, management procedures were
abstracted from medical records
