Annex C- Design
and Installation Check List
The following checklist is a brief detail that could be helpful if you have decided to
install solar PV system in your premises.
No Design & Installation Check list Check
1Select a location (e.g. Empty space on roof top)
2Check the premises electricity demand and determine
the appropriate size of the Solar PV System.
3Assess the installation site for space requirements, and
access for maintenance.
4
Engage a Solar PV System Integrator
The appointed Licensed Contractor (i.e. Solar PV
System Integrator) will be responsible for the design
and implementation of the connection of the Solar PV
System to the electrical installation.
5
Select PV Module
a) Number of PV Modules needed.
b) Type and rating.
c) Mounting method.
6
Select inverter to match PV array:
a) Number of inverters needed.
b) Inverter type and rating.
c) Location of inverters (accessible for inspection and
maintenance).
7
Select the most appropriate mounting system
(mechanical structure) for the Solar PV system. Ensure
there are fixing and mounting points available.
8
Assess the proposed mounting structure:
a) Additional load introduced by the Solar PV system
on the roof must be checked.
b) Additional wind load must be checked.
c) Roof waterproofing must not be compromised
during installation.

9
Ensure solar system access:
a) Ensure location to be mounted will get maximum
exposure to sunlight (aim for South);
b) Ensure location if away from any obstruction and
shaded areas.
c) Ensure adequate space is provided to perform
routine module cleaning.
10
Ensure all PV modules connected to the same inverter
face the same direction or use multiple Maximum
power point tracking (mppt) tracking inverters.
11
Ensure PV modules are mounted at the optimal tilt
angle depending on installation conditions (typically a
tilt angle of between 10° to 20° degrees is
recommended).
12 Ensure sucient ventilation space is allocated behind
the PV array for cooling purposes.
13
Ensure:
a) Cabling used meet sucient current-carrying
capacity and are suitably rated for usage in the
environment.
b) d.c. cables are single-core and double-insulated.
c) Cable insulation on outdoor cables must withstand
high temperature and UV exposure for an estimated
period of more than 20 years.
[Note: PVC and XLPE cables are inadequate on the d.c.
side and must not be exposed to the weather
elements.]
14 Determine if a Lightning Protection System is needed.
Consult a lightning specialist.
15
Ensure that the installation is in full compliance with
the requirements of the latest edition of the Electricity
Wiring Regulations (i.e. General principles, Protection,
Isolation and switching, Labelling, inspection and
testing.

16
During installation:
a) PV system should be installed by qualified /experienced
installers
b) Safety rules must be observed
c) Installer must wear safety protection equipment
PPE; and
d) Only proper certified safety equipment can be used
e.g. scaolding, stepladders, etc.
17 Cables must be properly connected, secured, and
routed.
18 Ensure continuity and insulation tests are done.
19 Completion of the required documentation, inspection
and testing as outlined in Annex F
20 Ensure the design meets local utility interconnection
and approval requirements.
